Question 33: Is it correct to repeatedly recite scriptures to accumulate merit?
from PRACTICE GUIDE FOR LAY PRACTITIONERS · host Janna Order Monastery
Merit is acquired by benefiting sentient beings, reverently supporting enlightened beings, or cultivating wholesome thoughts. Reciting scriptures doesn't directly benefit sentient beings, unless the scriptures are simple enough for spirits to understand (spirits have limited understanding and require extremely simple scriptures to comprehend). The main purpose of reciting scriptures is to reinforce the teachings of the Buddha and the Patriarchs, cultivating right view and right thought in preparation for long-term practice. After reciting scriptures, one must diligently apply what they've learned. Merely reciting without putting the teachings into practice is insufficient. The lofty aspirations expressed in the scriptures, such as the wish for the liberation of all sentient beings, are just wishes, not yet realized. Other religions often have detailed and well-structured plans for spreading their teachings, going beyond mere prayer, which is why they attract many followers. We should balance the time spent reciting scriptures with the time spent applying the Buddha's teachings in our daily lives. The time dedicated to actual practice should be significantly greater to accumulate genuine merit.#Buddhism #SpiritualPractice #LayPractitioner #Merit #Sutras #Dharma #Mindfulness #Karma #Wisdom #BuddhistTeachings
