Question 35: How can we help hungry and suffering wandering spirits?
from PRACTICE GUIDE FOR LAY PRACTITIONERS · host Janna Order Monastery
Offering food and reciting sutras for these spirits can bring them great comfort, as they have endured hunger and thirst for a long time. We can place a small portion of food outside our home, inviting nearby spirits to enjoy it, while reciting a brief (easy-to-understand) sutra. By doing this regularly, the spirits in the area may gradually be drawn to Buddhist practice, potentially leading to a more peaceful and prosperous neighborhood. For those living in apartments or dormitories where offering food outside might be provocative, placing some snacks in a discreet corner can still be effective. We can also encourage these spirits to sincerely embrace Buddhism and seek refuge, helping them escape the suffering of their current existence. When visiting a new place, it's considerate to offer a small amount of food to the local spirits as a gesture of goodwill. They will likely appreciate this act. If we encounter a family experiencing constant conflict, we might suggest they offer food to spirits, as the discord could be influenced by spiritual forces rather than solely human interactions. By deepening our understanding of the spirit realm, we can gain new perspectives on life. It's important to strive to create merit daily, so that when we depart this life, we may avoid being trapped in a realm of perpetual hunger and thirst.#Buddhism #SpiritualPractice #LayPractitioner #Compassion #Spirits #Karma #Merit #Dharma #Mindfulness #InnerPeace
