Question 36: What does "A day without work is a day without food" truly mean?

Patriarch Baizhang (whose Buddhist name is Huaihai, 720-814) lived on a remarkably high mountain, estimated to be hundreds of zhang in height, which led to His name Baizhang. He was a renowned Zen Master, known for His profound virtue and for compiling the Qinggui (a set of monastic rules). His saying, "If we don't work for a day, we don't eat for a day," is well-known in Zen circles.Living on a high mountain with few donors and a large community of monks, the entire monastery had to cultivate crops for sustenance. Even at 80 years old, Venerable Baizhang still used a hoe to tend the vegetable garden and contribute to the kitchen. His disciples, concerned for their aging Master, hid His hoe to prevent Him from working. When Venerable Baizhang discovered the missing tool, He retreated to His room and refused to eat. Alarmed, the disciples repented and returned the hoe. Venerable Baizhang then opened His door, smiled, and said, 一日不做一日不食 (which literally means ‘a day without work a day without food’).Every day, we benefit from nature's bounty and society's contributions: clean air, fresh water, nourishing food, well-maintained roads, comfortable clothing, safe shelter, and meaningful social connections. If we don't give back, it's unfair and unsustainable. Our past good merit will dwindle, potentially leading to hardship. Those who understand the Dharma consider daily how they can contribute to the world, ensuring their good merit endures.
