Question 40: What should a lay practitioner do if their house is near a cemetery?

If our house is near a cemetery, it's advisable to quietly and regularly offer food to the spirits. There's no need for elaborate rituals. Simply place some food on a piece of paper, invite them to partake, and suggest they follow Buddhist teachings. If possible, play a small recording of Dharma talks in a corner for the spirits to hear. Many spirits have been known to move on to better realms after hearing the Dharma.Avoid placing offerings too close to our house, as it might attract a large number of spirits and cause disturbances (!!!).Even if people of other faiths frequent the cemetery, the spirits there can still benefit from food offerings and Dharma teachings.Occasionally, invite brethren to help clean up the cemetery.Some people, especially those with attractive appearances, might be followed by spirits after visiting a cemetery. If we feel uncomfortable, it's best to avoid such visits. Those with a strong spiritual practice, such as regular worship, cultivating compassion, reciting sutras, meditating, and performing good deeds, will have an invisible protective force that keeps spirits at bay.If we experience strange phenomena in our home caused by spirits from the cemetery, simply light incense and politely ask them not to disturb our household, assuring them that we will continue to offer them food at the cemetery.
