They have assistants and are appointed by the heavenly realm. Sometimes, virtuous officials who have passed away are deified by the king to become tutelary deities, overseeing their former territories and providing subtle assistance to the living. The king may not see the spirit world, but his royal decrees still hold sway there. And His virtue is truly remarkable. Understanding Earth Gods in this way suggests it would be more respectful to place their statues on a higher shelf rather than directly on the ground.- The role of spirits: The invisible realm is complex, and its inhabitants are occupied with their own affairs. The small miracles that occur in our homes are usually handled by the spirits residing there, rather than by the Earth God.- The role of the Wealth God: If a Wealth God exists, His role is likely to encourage us to be charitable and generous, thereby accumulating merit which, in turn, brings chances of wealth.- The significance of household shrines: Many rural households have a simple altar in their front yard consisting of a pole, a board, incense, and fruit offerings.
