Rafael Gallo nasceu em São Paulo, no Brasil, em 1981. Começou por desejar ser desenhador. Na adolescência decidiu por outro caminho e formou-se em música pela Universidade Estadual de São Paulo, fez um mestrado em meios e processos audiovisuais, e estudos na área de música para cinema. A dada altura, por volta dos 30 anos, abandonou a carreira musical para se dedicar à escrita. Esta opção acabaria por se revelar difícil de manter sem apoios e, por essa razão, para conseguir pagar as contas, viu-se obrigado a encontrar um emprego. Trabalhou no Tribunal de Justiça e descreve essa experiência como “um choque muito grande”, um estranhamento enorme”, “um trabalho burocrático sem graça”. Podemos talvez dizer que o livro "Dor Fantasma", que acabaria por vencer o prémio José Saramago em 2022, nasce desse estranhamento e do que ele fez ao nosso convidado. A personagem principal de Dor Fantasma, Rómulo Castelo, é um pianista que a dada altura da vida vê uma das mãos amputadas na sequência de um acidente. Rafael Gallo ter-se-á visto amputado da sua natureza artística quando ficou fechado numa repartição a fazer um trabalho burocrático, mas desse estado de espírito nasceu "Dor Fantasma", e depois o reconhecimento com o Prémio Saramago, e com esta distinção uma espécie de um novo ser humano, renascido. Autor de ficção e de conto, já arriscou também escrever poesia, mas não crê ser ainda um grande poeta.
