Hace veinte años, los zoólogos descubrieron que las rayas de las cebras, tan visibles a nuestros ojos, las convierten en invisibles a los ojos de la mosca Tse-tsé. Las moscas Tse-tsé se alimentan de la sangre del ser humano y otros animales, entre ellos los impalas, cebras, ñus y demás fauna, pero, al hacerlo, transmiten un parásito que provoca la enfermedad del sueño. Esos animales, al ser infectados, quedan debilitados e incluso, literalmente, caer dormidos en cualquier sitio y son presa fácil para sus depredadores. El análisis genético de la sangre extraída del intestino de moscas Tse-tsé capturadas en regiones de la sabana africana poblada por cebras, ñus y otros animales indicó que ninguna de las moscas analizadas había picado a una cebra, y eso a pesar de que el corto pelo de estos animales no impide a las moscas alcanzar su piel. Gracias a las rayas blancas y negras, las moscas parecen no poder evaluar bien la distancia para el aterrizaje sobre la piel y suelen golpearse y rebotar, saliendo despedidas hacia otros destinos menos confusos.
