El cerebro humano es el órgano más complejo que ha creado la naturaleza, al menos aquí en la Tierra. Equipado con conjunto de neuronas y células de soporte (gliales) va tejiendo todo lo que somos, sentimos o pensamos. Las neuronas son unidades transmisoras de información. La señal es recibida por las dendritas, atraviesa el cuerpo celular y se encamina por el axón hasta la neurona siguiente. Cuando la señal llega al terminal axónico se liberan unas moléculas, unos mensajeros químicos, que se unen a los receptores existentes en la membrana de la neurona que recibe la información. La recepción provoca cambios eléctricos en la membrana que, a su vez, activan los canales iónicos encargados de transmitir la señal a través del cuerpo de la neurona receptora hasta la neurona siguiente.
