Recognise 110: GIDEÖN

from djmag · host djmag

From playing the very first track at the 1994 Anti-Criminal Justice Bill protest in Trafalgar Square, to organising some of the UK’s most significant sound system-led protests in recent memory, Gideon Berger, aka @gideon_dj_official, has devoted his life to using house music as a political force. A DJ, producer, activist, and event organiser extraordinaire, he’s also the co-founder of Glastonbury’s iconic NYC Downlow and Block9, a respected creative director, and label honcho at HOMO-CENTRIC. Here, alongside a mix of original releases, remixes and upcoming exclusives, he speaks to Ria Hylton about his dedication to the queer roots of house, kicking against commercialisation, and understanding dance music not as a way of escaping the world, but of changing it.
