En cualquier edificio, ya sean viviendas, oficinas o fábricas existen multitud de elementos que consumen energía: aparatos de aire acondicionado y de calefacción, sistemas de iluminación, ordenadores, etc. Además, las personas circulan por las distintas estancias, respiran y liberan CO2, abren y cerran puertas o ventanas, encienden o apagan las luces y se concentran en lugares determinados ¿Cómo se puede gestionar la energía del edificio de manera que su consumo sea óptimo? Las redes de sensores pueden medir esas variables y permiten gestionar los datos para convertir el lugar en un edificio inteligente. A estas redes se suma Internet porque permite que las cosas que utilizamos en la vida normal se comuniquen entre sí. Esto es lo que se conoce como el "Internet de las Cosas".
