Reformation Series: The Dark Side of the Reformation

Many positive changes came about as a result of the reformation. Not only did the Protestant movement rise from the efforts of Luther and other reformers, but slowly an internal reformation began to grow inside the Catholic church. This all came at a cost, however. The Reformation and related events triggered many uprisings, rebellions, feuds, religious wars, and inquisitions which resulted in the deaths of millions, although reliable figures are elusive. There were atrocities committed on the Catholic and Protestant sides of this issue. The atrocities of the papacy are often pointed out by Protestants, but Luther himself approved of the squashing of a German peasant uprising that resulted in 100,000 deaths. Calvin and Knox were particularly fond of seeing "heretics" burned at the stake, although Calvin said he would have preferred to see Servetus beheaded...All the self-righteous, heretic-burning fun than you can handle as we explore "The Dark Side of the Reformation"!Join the conversation!
