Rerooting After Family Estrangement

from The Spiritual Shitshow Podcast · host Julie Nguyen

Send us Fan MailWhen your own family doesn’t feel like home, the pain is hard to name and even harder to explain. I’m sharing what I’ve been moving through with family estrangement, the quiet grief of not being fully seen, and why that longing can feel so intense in your body. Belonging isn’t just an emotion, it’s biology, and when early connection is strained or unsafe, your nervous system keeps asking the same questions: Where do I belong, who has my back, and what does support feel like?We talk about radical acceptance as a real layer of healing, especially when the relationship may never become what you needed. I open up about releasing the role I took on in my family, the heartbreak of letting go of a fantasy, and the self doubt that can creep in when there’s distance with parents or siblings. Sometimes the most freeing shift is realizing not all distance is rejection; sometimes it’s limitation, a lack of capacity that still hurts but stops you from turning the pain into a story about your worth. From there, I explore rerooting: choosing where your belonging comes from now. Rerooting doesn’t mean abandoning family, it means expanding your definition of family into chosen family, community, friendships, and relationships that are consistent and emotionally available. We make room for grief, anger, and disappointment while still choosing love that can reach you, love that doesn’t require you to prove yourself, and love that feels like you can finally exhale. If this resonates, hit play, share it with someone who needs permission to stop chasing the impossible, and tell me what “new roots” look like for you.
