Un amplio estudio auspiciado por el Centro Europeo para el Control de Enfermedades analiza la incidencia de infecciones causadas por dieciséis tipos de bacterias resistentes a varios antibióticos en Europa durante 2015. Los autores estiman que solo durante el año 2015 se produjeron en Europa 671.689 infecciones por bacterias resistentes a los antibióticos, de las cuales el 63,5% se produjeron en hospitales o centros de salud. Estas infecciones causaron un número de muertes estimado en 33.110. Los autores estiman también los años de vida perdidos no solo por muerte prematura, sino por enfermedad o por discapacidad. Los resultados indican que las bacterias resistentes causaron en 2015 en Europa una pérdida de 874.541 años de vida y años de vida en buena salud combinados.
