Damit gab er den Auftakt zu einer Revolution, die rund ein Jahrzehnt mit unerbittlicher Grausamkeit toben und als griechischer Unabhängigkeitskrieg in die Geschichte eingehen sollte. Ein blutiger Kampf, in dem das Unvorstellbare zur Regel wurde und nichts war, wie es schien oder scheinen wollte. Zahllose Partikularinteressen prallten in wechselnden Allianzen aufeinander, reguläre und irreguläre Truppen waren nicht unterscheidbar, das Brigantentum erlebte eine Hochblüte. Unsagbares Leid kam über die vorwiegend bäuerliche Bevölkerung. Den Interessen der damaligen Weltmächte lief der Aufstand eigentlich zuwider, dennoch wären die Geschehnisse ohne ihr Zutun undenkbar gewesen. Doch wer waren jene Griechen, um deren Freiheit es vorgeblich gehen sollte? Wer waren die Türken, und wer die Philhellenen, die aus unterschiedlichen Motiven dafür sorgten, dass die anfänglich fast lächerlich kleine Revolte über Jahre nicht zum Stillstand kam? Und was hat das alles mit uns zu tun? Richard Schuberth versucht, dem auf den Grund zu gehen und findet so manche Erklärung.
