Funded with second mortgages and $300,000 from friends, that one location grew into a public company with more than 265 restaurants and roughly $1 billion in annual revenue. In 2011, they sold CPK to Golden Gate Capital for approximately $470 million. Credited with pioneering California-style pizza, Rosenfield chronicled the journey in The California Pizza Kitchen Story and continues to invest in and advise new restaurant concepts through his venture firm. ➡️ Show Links https://www.instagram.com/rickrosenfield/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/rick-rosenfield-9185933a9/ https://www.rickrosenfield.com ➡️ Podcast Sponsors Hubspot - https://hubspot.com/ Huel - https://huel.com/scott (Code: scott) NetSuite - https://netsuite.com/scottclary/ Framer - https://framer.com/design (Code: SuccessStory) LinkedIn Ads - https://linkedin.com/scottclary Cohesity - https://www.cohesity.com/datacloud Whatnot - https://www.whatnot.com/ Monarch - https://www.monarch.com/ (Code: success) Cash App - https://cash.app/ (Code: cashapp10) MyFitnessPal - https://podcasts.myfitnesspal.com (Code: SCOTT) Life at the Speed of Play - https://getmarksbook.com/success ➡️ Talking Points 00:00 – Intro 04:28 – From Prosecuting the Mob to Pizza 07:02 – Why the Mafia Didn’t Scare Him 08:40 – Why Lawyers Opened a Restaurant 10:33 – The Birth of California Pizza Kitchen 11:45 – From Pasta to Pizza 13:04 – They Bet Their Homes on CPK 14:50 – The Barbecue Chicken Pizza Breakthrough 18:06 – When Should You Quit? 21:26 – Sponsor Break 23:47 – Why Failure Makes You Better 25:15 – When Grit Becomes a Weakness 27:22 – The Founder–Operator Partnership 28:44 – How to Take Calculated Risks 33:52 – How Much Risk Success Requires 36:33 – Sponsor Break 40:24 – How CPK Became a Household Name 44:07 – Raising Money From Friends 47:46 – How Rick and Larry Divided the Work 50:55 – Taking CPK Public 52:27 – Why They Passed on Fast Growth 56:12 – The Deal That Changed CPK 58:03 – Why Rick Sold the Company 1:00:23 – Sponsor Break 1:04:49 – The Hardest Part of Letting Go 1:07:35 – The CPK Disaster Nobody Saw Coming 1:13:11 – How Bad Leadership Damages a Brand 1:18:37 – The Brand Lesson Most Founders Miss 1:19:47 – Why Culture Is Everything 1:24:20 – Building a Company People Believe In 1:29:12 – What Rick Is Building Now 1:33:18 – Why He Wrote His Story 1:35:59 – Who the Book Is Really For 1:39:39 – Rick’s Biggest Lesson 1:40:19 – The Advice He’d Give His Younger Self
