Today, Roman Catholicism is both ancient and immediate—a global tradition with roots stretching back two millennia, yet facing the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century. Over one billion people identify as Catholic, their lives shaped by rituals, institutions, and a shared sense of belonging.But where does Roman Catholicism stand now, and what tensions define its present moment? Demographically, the landscape has shifted dramatically. Once centered in Europe, Catholicism’s center of gravity moved to Latin America during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and now increasingly toward Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Nigeria all have significant Catholic populations—each bringing unique cultural and pastoral priorities. In these places, liturgy, devotion, and theology are adapted to local realities. Bishops and theologians in Latin America, for example, have addressed poverty and social justice through gatherings like the Medellín and Puebla conferences.
