Imagine the winding Tiber River. It snakes through central Italy. This land was both fertile and dangerous. The city of Rome slowly rose from this landscape. Seven low hills were ringed by dense oak groves and rocky bluffs. Early settlements appeared on these hills by the eighth century BCE.Their mud-brick huts were simple. Their timber palisades marked a humble beginning. Yet, this was the start of an imperial colossus. Excavations on the Palatine and Capitoline hills reveal their first dwellings. We find postholes and hearths. These are mixed with refuse pits and livestock enclosures. It shows a society changing. It moved from nomadic life to settled farming. The earliest Romans were Latin-speaking tribes. They were not alone. Etruscan and Greek neighbors pressed in from north and south. They brought art, religion, and city planning ideas. Burial sites from this time hold grave goods. We find bronzework, imported pottery, and amulets. These hint at trade across the Mediterranean. The Tiber River was navigable. It was also unpredictable. It brought both commerce and conflict.
