در سال ۲۰۱۴ میلادی حدود ده سال پیش، سازمان ملل این روز را برای برجسته کردن اهمیت توانمند کردن جوانان از طریق کسب مهارت‌ها نه تنها به منظور اشتغال و مشاغل شایسته و کارآفرینی برای جوانان، بلکه تاکید بر نقش جوانان در ریشه‌کن کردن چالش‌های متعدد و جدی جهانی تعیین کرد. چالش‌هایی که در بسیاری از مواقع زندگی، کار و تحصیل جوانان را مختل و به طور کلی ثبات و آینده جوامع انسانی را تهدید می‌کنند. تم امسال سازمان ملل برای این روز جهانی «مهارت‌های جوانان برای صلح و توسعه» تعیین شده تا اهمیت نقش حیاتی جوانان در تحقق صلح، حل مناقشات، ترویج توسعه پایدار و فراگیر و و ساختن جهانی بهتر و عادلانه‌تر برای همه انسان‌ها برجسته کند.
