Throughout history, merging church and state has consistently led to oppression, violence, and the corruption of both institutions. But there's a practical question that exposes the fundamental problem: Which version of Christianity would become official? Which Bible—Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox? Which denomination sets the doctrine? The moment you try to establish Christianity as a state religion, you're forced to choose one interpretation over thousands of others, effectively making the government an arbiter of theology. History shows this always ends in persecution—of other Christians, of other faiths, and of dissenters.
