We can have hundreds of followers, thousands of likes, and yet still feel alone. Why is that? It's because humans are meant to be together, to make real connections that make each other better. At the YMCA, people play, learn, and overcome their challenges together. There's really no substitute for a smiling face and feeling a sense of belonging. Together, we're stronger, we're braver, and bolder. When we're together, amazing things happen. Feel what it means to be greater together at your local YMCA. Put down that coffee and grab a wine.

Get ready for another episode of Nursing and Cursing, a parenting podcast that covers more shit than your baby's full diaper. I'm Kate. I'm a stay-at-home mom of three in Brooklyn, New York. I'm trying to figure out whether I should go back to work, have another baby, or spend the rest of my life waiting for my fresh direct order. Hey, I'm Christine, a video editor and a mom of two living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Allie here, podcasting up in the mountains in South Kona, Hawaii. I work as a real estate agent and a mom of two boys. Hey, I'm Molly. I'm a teacher raising two kids in St. Augustine, Florida. And I'm Sarah, a new mom to one sweet babe living in Brooklyn, New York. Between five busy households, it's a miracle we make it on the mic at all. But trust me, we need this as much.

as you do hey guys hey guys welcome to nursing and cursing this week we are here on the mic discussing yolo versus solo oh yeah hello okay what does that mean that sounds like a star wars movie why don't you start kate by telling us how um this conversation came about obviously on our text thread um i'm referencing text thread obviously this topic came about because my husband scored um a last minute chance to go see drake um when he was in brooklyn and i was telling you guys and nobody was and i was like jeremy's going to see drake i'm coming home put the kids to bed i'm gonna watch tv in bed and not one of you thought that jeremy was a lucky one not one of you was you were all like nice oh my god your night sounds amazing your night sounds so good you didn't have to go to drake that's awesome There is nothing. Just live into those sheets, man. Kids are already tired Saturday night. No need for a bath. Just pop them into bed. Go do me. Pop them into bed. Just like you're going to just like pop some croissants into the oven. Just pop them in. So I agree. Yeah. I mean, what is better than a fucking night in your sheets alone? Nothing. It sounds so sexual. It's not. It does. It's like, oh my gosh. But it could be. It could be. It could be. It could be. Right, Sarah. YOLO versus solo sex. Okay. That's another. That's a whole nother app.

It is another episode. There are times when Yolo trumps solo for me, but it's very rare and it usually has to do with me and a girlfriend. Like, Critty, remember that time in LA when I was very, very, very pregnant and we were trying to get out to see Dixie Chicks one last time? Yes, I was pregnant too. Were we both pregnant? We were both pregnant. I was early stages pregnant and you were four or five months ahead of me.

and I remember trudging up the hill at Hollywood Bowl yeah and just like getting crazy cramps but being like oh no we but we yelled so hard Molly first of all okay you were very pregnant I was a nauseous stage we hit the candy aisle so hard we got like because we couldn't drink you guys we had to just party somehow so we got so much sugar but then we had the worst nosebleed seats and we wanted to get down to the front so I was kind of holding Molly's arm and she was kind of like exaggerating pregnant limping remember that i think we've told this story on this podcast before but that was us yoloing and we basically just had all the confidence in the world oh yeah we're just trying to get to our seats down there and molly's like leaning into me breathing heavily and we totally got like front totally that was the best night and i'm pretty sure i did get wine no you did not did you i feel like i just remember us getting like giant tootsie rolls and hot tamales yes yes we got like a coke you yolo we yoloed so hard There's no doubt that a night of YOLO can just, it can fill your cup and make your spirit soar. And you're like, oh my gosh, I rule this night rules. There's nothing like it. But most of the time, let's get real. Where do you guys lay on the topic? YOLO or solo? Solo. For sure. I used to be so YOLO and now I'm so solo. My last YOLO was 2016 at the Dixie Tricks.

Sorry, pre-kids, were you YOLO or solo? YOLO for me. Actually, JJ and I were so YOLO in New Orleans. Yeah. Because I was a kid. But YOLO just takes so much away. Pretty. Midnight ride as in LA. We were so YOLO. We would do everything for the YOLO experience. We were like, oh, my God, there's a bike ride through the streets of LA. I'm just dying as they're casually tossing around YOLO. Okay. Guys.

This is the definition of moms. Cool moms. I used to be so fucking YOLO. I don't even think YOLO is a thing anymore. Is that a thing to say? But I don't care. I'm stuck in 2015 because that's the last time like YOLOed. That's the last time I had anything going on for myself. Hey, remember when we went to St. Augustine for Sarah's wedding and we like got scooters and we did that so fucking hard? I wanted to do a spin class with your mom at 8 a.m. just because I could. Yeah, you got to YOLO when you're on a trip.

Guys, I just remembered that part of this topic I wanted to bring up. You want to know what the best YOLO ever is? I don't know. The best solo ever. What? I just realized it because I just took a day off work and sent my kids into school. Being in your home alone. Oh, yeah. There's nobody sleeping. Even just your house, just you and your house. It is the best. And you know what? Speaking about being in your home alone and just enjoying your environment, I'm going to take a quick break, you guys.

You know, we all have our favorite photos, the ones we cherish and adore. So here's a question for you. Wouldn't you love to see those special photos that are sitting on your phone or computer displayed on your wall? Yes. Amazing pictures this summer on the coast of New Hampshire that I wanted to turn into really nice, one-of-a-kind decorative prints without, you know, paying a fortune. Then I heard about Canvas People. Canvas People transforms your photos into beautiful, unique, museum-quality canvases that are easy to hang and make fabulous home decor. And you know I love that. I'm not turning down something free. I'm going to do one for JJ's birthday. Great. So let's get back. We're in our house. You're all alone. How often does that happen when you're in your own home and nobody is home? Like, it's not the best place to be. No, it secretly happens for me almost every day though, but not always. Nice. Right. Cause you got three in school and you're at home. Oh, I'm very, what do you do? It sounds like it's, it sounds so special when you say it like that, but it's not, I feel like I dropped them off at school. And by the time I get.

home from doing shit i only really ever have like two hours before i have to go get them again and i mostly do right right i mostly am doing dishes dinner prep laundry and racing around the house i'm wasting the clock basically it doesn't feel relaxing at all but it's nice to just have that without someone crying in the background i don't know i mean all those things naked yes yeah yeah totally i get to do that once once every two weeks i get the house alone for a day because matilda goes to her grandma's for a little bit and levi's in school and i'm just doing shorts and stuff but it is amazing how much you can get done when no one else is in the house Yes. And blasting your music. Blasting music, blasting NPR, eating. Oh, my God. I love to fucking blast NPR. Blasting NPR. Yeah, let's go down the bullets. What are the things to do? That's the saddest solo yellow I've ever heard of. Yeah, but you know what? I just never know what's going on in the news. I just get to catch up. Right. Yeah. It's all day long, you guys. So it makes me feel like I'm back in the world for a second to do that. Give me some more bullets, guys. What are your favorite things to do while soloing? Watch TV. Take a bath. Oh, yeah. Face mask. Face mask up in here.

I want to take a bath. My favorite solo is seriously just lying on the couch, like in the middle of the house, scrolling on my phone where I'm not, no, no single person is going to be like, what are you, Oh, what are you looking at? Oh, can I use your phone? Or like mom, mom, mom. Cause it feels so indulgent to just go through your phone for an hour. Like, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Like it feels, it would feel so bad to do that while the kids were home, but I like to eat just like a bunch of bowl of cereal. That's Sarah's. Nobody's judging me on how, like if I have to keep refilling.

nobody's judging the amount of tv i'm watching nobody should be anyway it's like we all want to do what our kids want to do just uninterrupted screen time and uninterrupted treats right i always make a french press whether i need it want it or not i always if i'm home alone i'm like okay i'm making a pot of coffee and then i'll probably will like get on the thread with you guys on my porch or yeah that's right now Go shopping for duvet covers online. Oh, my God. Online shopping. Yeah. A lot of Amazon. That's a huge one. That is huge. A lot online browsing for, like, what? Browsing for days. What, like, stools you're going to put at your island one day. I mean, Haagen-Dazs or Ben & Jerry's is usually included if I have a nighttime YOLO and obviously flex. You mean a nighttime solo? A solo, solo, solo. Would anybody use their solo for things like exercise or read a book or do something to better themselves? I would never. No. No. No. No. The worst is when I use my solo. To me, that's a YOLO. Yeah. Let's go.

The worst is when I use my solo time to like cook meals. I hate doing that. I feel like it's getting robbed when I'm cooking a meal. I'm like, oh, this is not cool. You know, I see that a lot on Instagram though. Like people post like I finally had some free time to myself and I crafted up this cute little, you know. I crocheted. I crocheted a fucking sweater. Yeah, fuck you. I finally had some time. Can't do it. Do you spend a lot of your solo time looking at pictures and videos of your kids?

No. I do. I do. I'm always scrolling through my pictures. Because you're a really good mom. No, I'm not. Because she loves photography and video. That's like one of Critty's things. She will always have tons of video and pictures of her kids. Yeah, you're a media person. I feel like JJ and I used to do that on our dates. Yes. But that's actually so interesting because it's only now that we're talking about it that I'm realizing we don't do that anymore either. I like to get in my underwear, blast the music, and just start rearranging the furniture, rearranging all the throw pillows, rearranging all the blankets. Oh, my God.

That is so awesome. This episode should just go. The funny thing is, what about how blurry the line is? I feel like we can't tell when your solo becomes your YOLO. Allie's like, I love to blast the music. We've made no YOLO suggestions at all. But wait, but time out YOLO. So say your husband comes down and he's like, babe, throw on a dress. I'm taking you to an awesome dinner tonight. We're going to go on a hot ass date. Are you excited for that? Or would you rather solo at this point? First of all, who are you married to? Because I don't have that. We're playing fantasy.

so the panic sets in you're like oh great but now i need a babysitter now i need to make sure that they're whatever i've got food lined up and blah blah blah i start to get like oh this is so much more work then it's always great when you're out but yes actually this is an episode what do you do to get ready for your sitter because we last time when jeremy and i yolo'd last week um the effort I felt like from truly from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. I was only paving the way for the sitter for the whole and it was I was so tired and I actually felt when I got in the cab to meet Jeremy who net just met me right after work in the city and never never popped his head into the house I felt so resentful like oh now I gotta go on a fucking date and be all fucking psyched about it like I'm supposed to be fucking excited to hang out with you. The date prep is brutal. So intense. It's such a killer. It's such a killer. You know what, guys? Not to use too many acronyms, but I think all of us also suffer from FOMO, right? When somebody has an opportunity to YOLO instead of solo, we're going to YOLO. Then we're all like, oh my God.

That happens to me all the time. Even if Pete's like, we're going, we're going up north to the beach. We're going to put the boards in the truck. You don't have to come on the weekend. Like I, sometimes I have the opportunity to stay home and I'm like, oh my God, yes. But I get FOMO. I'm like, no, I'm going with FOMO. Yes. If anybody else is involved, for sure. Right. Molly means if it's just your husband and your kids, or you mean, wait, you would get FOMO with your husband and your kids. No, if it were my girlfriends doing something, I most likely will succumb to the FOMO and go ahead and YOLO. I have no problem with a solo, but I do have a lot of FOMO.

I really hope people made it. You guys, is anybody still listening or did everybody turn us off? Well, listen, guys, I got to step in right now and let you guys know about something. And I'm like clocking, oh sweet, okay, okay, he's going out. Listen, I love hanging out with my husband at home, but I clock it as like, okay, kids are in bed, this is going to be my solo. And at the last minute, there's pacing and texting, and it always comes down to, yeah, I think I'm just going to stay. That's so heartbreaking. You got the Netflix queued up, you got the Ben and Jerry's in the freezer, the bathroom's run.

that is really heartbreaking I always encourage my husband to go out on those nights too Molly I know exactly what you mean I'm like babe why don't you guys just try just get one drink like just right around by the house like you don't have to go out for the whole night yes totally you won't regret it I'm always like you won't regret it once you make the first move I'm like babe just go like you can come back after one beer if you want knowing that like one beer deep my husband's not gonna be home walking in the door till 2 a.m. anyway so I just gotta get that first beer in here out there and I'm good oh my god you guys wow yeah that's a top Oh, man. Giving me some excitement of what I'm going to play next on my next solo. All right. Who's got a nail fail, ladies? I got a funny fail, I guess. Okay. I was in the kitchen fucking doing, obviously, meal prep. And my husband was, I was wearing a dress and he came up behind me and he was trying to be real sensual. And he whispered something in my ear and I couldn't stop laughing because what I thought he said was.

what he actually said was i want to lift your dress up oh no but either way either way obviously get the fuck out of my way but when i thought he said when i thought he said i want to dress up i was laughing so hard that p was coming out like i because i thought he was i thought he was trying something new i thought in his mind he was like Okay, it's been 12 years. Let's try something new. And for days every time I thought of him saying that I was dying laughing. That is so good. Very good. That's my nail feel. That's good. That's my nail feel. It is both.

Who's next? I got a nail. I had my first weekend of leaving my baby with my husband. And it went great. And I got to go to a conference. What a way to solo it. You soloed so hard at a conference. We would have done Netflix. You went to a conference. You're just better than us. You are. You're always trying to improve yourself. I would have soloed at Froyo. You would have soloed at a conference. Get the fuck out of here.

Anyway, I guess it's a nail fail. Yeah, no, it's good. I just wasted and I went to a conference. But the conference was good. That's awesome. Yeah, there you go. Great. What's your fail? That was it. Allie, what you got in Hawaii? I got a nail. Go for it. Okay. I booked a plane ticket to come see some of you bitches. Yes. Yeah, girls. Yeah, go ahead.

Can you feel my FOMO through the mic? You can feel your FOMO, but I'm not. We're not giving up on you. Nobody thinks you're going to be there. You're coming, Molly. You're going to be there, Molly. Listen, let us know if you think that Molly needs to come. Obviously. Leave a note in the comments and let us know whether Molly needs to give in to the FOMO in yellow. Yeah, all four of you guys in. Wait, four of you? Yeah, all four of you in Oklahoma City for a weekend. In the porch. On the porch in the fall. Should we open a GoFundMe page?

Is there like a speaking event we could do in Oklahoma City? Oh, wow. We could do one video, you know. We're starting our YouTube channel, you guys. Just kidding. Anyway. Yeah, Molly, we could write this off. We can write this off. I can't wait to post a picture of everybody including Molly in Oklahoma because I'm not holding my breath whatsoever. I know Molly's going to be there. Of course Molly's coming. You're coming. Of course you're coming. I'm going to be so surprised if you're not there. I already told Garrett tonight you're coming. Yeah. Okay. Well.

I'm working on it. We're going to do a lemonade stand and we'll even throw some papaya and some mango and maybe we'll come up with a fund to do it. Okay. Got it. All right. Let's see, you guys. I have a fail.

and a nail oh my gosh okay so my fail is we walked into the did I step on your toes Ali did you have another one no you're good um I we walked into the public library and my son is like getting really into like books and I don't know where he got it but um he is he goes straight ahead of me speed walking up to the librarian's desk and says um can I please have some books with violence in them oh my goodness gracious I'm just like what do you even know what that means um But yeah, I just, it was one of those moments where I wanted to hide. Did she laugh? She laughed. And she was like, well, can you be more specific? He was like, stabbing. Yeah, I want stabbing. He was like, you know. Mommy, what do you mean? Yeah, I mean, he's into violence because he hears grownups say, you know, no violence. Well, that's too violent. We can't watch that. You probably don't even know what he's asking for. He just knows that it's something fucking exciting that he's not allowed to get. Because now at that time, he's like, I'm going to list violent things. I'm going to list violence things. Kicking. Choking. Okay, he's got it.

He has a great grasp on the whole concept. He's got an amazing comprehension of violence. Yeah, so that's just where we are right now. This kid, this mom that I like so much, and she's so, she has three kids, and she's so smart and so sweet, and her kids are angels. The one that's in third grade came up to her while we were hanging out the other day and said, I just want to be a cop because I want to use my gun on people. And then just walked away. She was like, hang on. Oh, God.

So, not just contextualizing. I got to say though, guys, my nail is like something I've been waiting for. I feel like forever. We're just hoping for, but... Today, you guys know that I'm teaching at a school and there's a pre-K that's attached to our elementary school and Augie is in it. So he's technically across the hall from me, which is so lovely. And his amazing teacher came over today and I'm like, oh, what's she doing in here? She's like, listen, I got to talk to you. And I'm like, okay. We have this award this month. It's the Respect Award. And two kids from each class are being chosen to come up in front of the whole entire school and they win a big party.

a movie and popcorn party and Augie's getting it. Oh, yay. Most respectful. Amazing. Great work. So he doesn't know it's happening on Friday. Tim and I are, obviously I'm showing up, but Tim's coming and he's going to get called in front of the whole school to come up. That is so cool. You're going to cry your fucking river. I like, I'm so, I feel like I won the lottery because you know how it goes you guys at home. It's not like that. He screams at how disgusting my dinner is and all the other kids. But to hear that, that's what he's doing.

doing at school wow just to know that I'm just a master psychopath on your hands yeah he's got it figured out he's like look at my violent things at bedtime act super respectful at school got it right okay that's aka genius genius oh my god yeah that's awesome yay congratulations Augie okay my nail fail you guys my birthday was I don't remember a week or two ago and my nail was that my husband planned for us to staycation so he got his mom to spend the night and we went to this awesome hotel downtown in the big city had a nice dinner and basically the gift was we're going to sleep in like this is it awesome so that was that so the fail was we go into our room and the window is really really tall like just tall huge huge window i don't know 16 feet does that sound tall Yeah. It's super, super tall. It's insanely tall. It is insanely tall. I'll send you a picture. But anyway, we go to bed, we turn out the lights and we turn out the lights. I'm like, no, but the lights aren't off. Garrett's like, no, the lights are off. That's the fucking giant window behind us and the city lights beaming in on us. I'm like, well, I'm like, our whole room is lit up. I can't sleep like this. And so just all night long, we were wide awake.

wait there were no drapes on the window it was like it was see-through it was like the curtain was drawn but it was like so intensely bright and like every hour one of us would wake up like oh my god i feel like there's like a train about to come into the room like it was so bright blinding bright so we get up in the morning and i'm like oh let's just open up this curtain and just start the day and um behind it was a beautiful heavy velvet blackout drape tucked away dude you were given the gift of sleep and you squandered it Squandered it, waking up all night. Ah, it's so bright. And two of you. Like, not one of you was like, oh, where's the blackout shade? We're in a hotel. Guys, it was curtains drawn. I can't explain it. And, like, the window was right there. You could see the window panes. I'm like, there's no blackouts back there. Whatever. I mean, even in a motel. Been there, Chrissy. That's right. Maybe. Listen. Oh, my God. Maybe. We had that in our days in Nebraska. Yes. Yes, they did. Because they had it everywhere. Well. Exactly. Well. Yeah. I blew it. Sarah, did that happen to you, too, or is it just that you shared the room with an elderly person? No, I didn't. Oh, my God.

We don't often do this, but we need to hit one more topic. Yolo versus solo. Between the sheets. Between the sheets. Okay. Yeah. That's a good one, you guys. So seriously, would you rather? Much rather Yolo. Would you Yolo or solo? You'd rather Yolo than solo. Oh, hell yeah. I'd rather Yolo too, but she knows her husband listens. You can hear it in her voice. JJ, it's time to turn it off, buddy. Yeah.

Take out those earbuds. I'd rather YOLO, but the allure of Solo is like, okay, I could be done in two minutes or less. It's like, I have to be a production. It could just be like, let me run up and do that, and then I can get back to my business. And you don't need to return the favor. Take your clothes off. You don't need to do anything, whereas YOLO is like at least going to be four to five minutes.

You know, and that's going to eat a little bit into my time to do things around the house and stuff. Well, you guys know that yellowing takes at least 30 minutes around here. Oh, Sarah, you've got to love the solo. I do. Sarah, you're shaving 27 whole minutes. You're shaving an episode of anything off. And just straight up exercise. For real, 30 minutes or like legit from start to finish, like 30 full minutes.

I mean, that's what it feels like. Well, it's 30 minutes could be one. You know, it depends what you're doing in the 30 minutes. Because if it's a full 30 minute session, that could work. You know, give and take, warming up. 30 minutes? That's a long time. Warming up? I mean, you know, like. We sound like prudes. We're not prudes. We're all just next level exhausted. I don't think we're prudes. Oh, I'm not. You're warming up. Yeah, I feel like warming up is. No, warming up for me is just a time issue. Like, come on. Do you mean warming up just like making out? Maybe oral sex? No. That sounds so tiring.

You guys, I'm not going to get into it on this podcast because I think they're like, can you imagine if you did make out and oral sex and then regular sex every time you get sex with your husband? Kate, I do. Molly's husband is a couple of times. People are doing it every other day. There's a huge difference. But making out? Exactly, Kate.

You're doing it every three days. You cannot do that. You cannot do that. Once a month or twice a month. Why do you even get started without making out, though? Easy. Oh, my God. What are you talking about? You just remove the bottoms and just go. Wow. I can't do that. Oh, I can. Can't do it. I'm not bragging. It's true. You guys have so much more sex than I have. You guys are very sexually active. Which, hats off to you. It's awesome. Pants off to you.

Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Pants off. YOLO versus solo. We have gotten off track, guys. Oh, yeah. YOLO versus solo. Okay. So most of us chose YOLO, but Sarah's going with a solo. Right? Due to time constraints. Time constraints. You know. Yeah. If I'm short on time, it's absolutely solo. But.

And what mother is short on time? Right. Speaking of, guys, we are out of time. But thank you so much for listening to the private details of our life. And I hope that you guys get some solo time or yolo time, whatever you like. Leave us a review on iTunes. We would so appreciate that here in season four. And we will see you guys next week. Take care. Good night. Bye. Bye, guys. Check us out next week for another episode of Nursing and Cursing. It's safe to admit that you just left your kid in the car to run into Ace Hardware for five minutes.
