Saint Lucia Unites in the Fight Against Cancer (English)
from Government of Saint Lucia
As the world observes World Cancer Day 2025, Saint Lucia joins the global movement under the theme, “Act Against Cancer: Lifestyle, Screenings, Advocacy.” This year’s observance highlights the urgent need for proactive cancer prevention, early detection, and equitable healthcare access. In Saint Lucia, cancer is not just a statistic many people are battling cancer today, right now, this very moment. Between 2018 and 2024, our nation recorded 1,519 cases of cancer, with women accounting for 820 cases and men 698 cases. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, while breast cancer leads among women. Each diagnosis is a story of struggle, resilience, and courage. These numbers reflect not just the burden of disease but also the need for continued efforts in awareness, prevention, and care. The good news is, we have seen the power of collective action. In 2024, the number of cancer-related deaths decreased significantly from 330 in 2023 to 168. This milestone reminds us that early detection, improved healthcare access, and community awareness save lives. But our work is far from over. This year, the Ministry of Health is building on the momentum of the Pledge 5 Challenge, inviting everyone to take simple, impactful steps to reduce cancer risk. By pledging to adopt five healthy habits, undergo screenings, support cancer survivors, and invite others to join, we strengthen our collective fight against cancer.
