More than 60 municipalities have been flagged by National Treasury for defaulting on payments to service providers for years, accumulating billions in debt to Eskom and water boards, and failing to pay workers' pension contributions amounting to R1.43bn. National Treasury says the aim of its action is to ensure fiscal discipline among local authorities.
