Sárdi Máriát 15 évesen deportálták a Bergen-belseni koncentrációs táborba, ahol embertelen körülmények között tartották. Édesanyja a karjai között hunyt el, a nagymamája nem sokkal utána. Egyiküket sem tudta megsiratni, mert “a lágerben kiapadnak a könnyek”. Miután csontsoványra fogyva sikerült hazavergődnie, megpróbálta teljesen maga mögött hagyni azokat a borzalmakat, amiket átélt. 50 évig teljesen magába temette minden fájdalmát. Még a gyermekei sem tudtak semmit édesanyjuk múltjáról. Fél évszázad után mégis úgy döntött, hogy előveszi naplóját, amit még kislányként kezdett írni, és a deportáláskor abbahagyta.
