Satiated Episode 122: Religion, Disordered Eating, Jewish Upbringing, and a Forever Changed Relationship With Food

from Satiated Podcast · host Stephanie Mara Fox

Happy Satiated Saturday! I'm Jewish. Some of you may know this. Some of you may not. While I would like to imagine this wouldn't change anyone's perception about who I am, for some individuals meaning is made for them out of this information. So as a desire grew to talk about the connection between religion and disordered eating patterns, I noticed and observed some fear arise talking about my own experiences. Being Jewish though and everything I navigated in relationship with food is informed by my Jewish upbringing and shaped who I am as a practitioner. I grew up surrounded by foods having meaning and so I have had an ongoing fascination with how we all relate with food in different ways for so many different reasons. In this week’s episode, I talk about how Judaism shaped my relationship with food. I discuss why it's so important to reflect on your own religious upbringing and how it may have affected your relationship with your food and body so you're aware of the beliefs you bring to the table every time you eat. You can also read the transcript to this week’s episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/religion-disordered-eating-jewish-upbringing-and-a-forever-changed-relationship-with-foodI provide a list of journaling questions in this episode.
