She became a journalist at the age of 20 and became the first tenured woman journalism professor at New York University, teaching about 1000 students over 12 years. She guest lectures extensively at universities, libraries, and religious institutions in North America and abroad. Just after Covid arrived in North America, journalist Helen Epstein was diagnosed with endometrial cancer — one of a predicted 66,570 new cases of cancer of the uterine body in the United States in 2021.
