Seeing Clearly
from Eclectic Cleric · host Rabbi Alon C Ferency
A meditation on Deuteronomy: Moses begins with words of rebuke, yet he also commands judges to “hear every person fairly.” In this practice, we learn to see clearly without cruelty. Begin by noticing yourself as you are today—your strengths, your fatigue, your habits, and the places that need repair. Let honest self-correction arise not from shame, but from love. Then bring to mind someone dear to you. Can you see them with the same balance—neither excusing every fault nor reducing them to a mistake? Finally, widen your attention to the larger world: the people you agree with, the people you resist, and the suffering you would rather avoid. Practice impartial judgment by listening inwardly before deciding, by making room for complexity, and by remembering that every person carries a story you cannot fully see. In the spirit of Devarim, may clarity lead to compassion, and may truth become a path toward repair.
