Şekerkamışı iki noktada kültüre alınıp dünyaya yayılmış; biri Yeni Gine kökenli Saccharum officinarum, diğeri de Tayvan ve Kuzey Çin'deki Saccharum sinense türü... Hayvan yemi olarak kullanılmış önce. İki türün de yayılması Güneydoğu Asya halklarının göçleriyle olmuş. Kamışın özsuyunu çıkarıp kaynatarak kristalize şeker elde etme işlemi antik çağlarda, Hindistan'da keşfedilmişti. İngilizce'deki "sugar" sözcüğü de Sanskritçe "sarkara" sözcüğünden geliyor.
