Self-Awareness is Key

Have you ever watched someone say or do something so stupid and thought to yourself, "If only they could see how stupid they look!"? Just as well you and I never behave like that. Yeah, right!! Self-awareness is knowing what's driving us, what pride or hurt from the past, what selfishness or desire is causing us to behave the way we are. Sadly though, many people never actually develop that sense of self-awareness; of being brutally honest with themselves about the less than ideal stuff going on in their hearts that's driving them to behave badly. Last time you had a difficult meeting with someone, before you began, did you ask yourself what you were feeling; what preconceptions were driving you; simply what mood you were in? Yet those things can make or break a meeting, a relationship. And that's even before we ask ourselves where the other person's coming from, what they're feeling, what hurts they may be processing. In truth, we all have blind spots about ourselves; an inability coupled with a lack of desire to be brutally honest about our own motives and intents. That's why we need help. And that's what drove King David of Israel to pray this prayer: Psalm 139:23-24 God, examine me and know my mind. Test me and know all my worries. Make sure that I am not going the wrong way. Lead me on the path that has always been right. If you suspect that your motives may not be entirely pure, ask God for His help in sorting through them. He'll make the world of difference.
