Pride is so sneaky. It creeps in when you succeed, when people applaud you, when you think you've finally got your life together. But here's the thing – pride is always a lie. Because without God's grace, none of us can even take our next breath. Charles Spurgeon once said that "The more grace we have, the less we'll think of ourselves, because grace, like light, reveals our impurity." Ain't that the truth! Step into a dark room and everything looks just fine. But flick on the light switch and suddenly you see the dust, the cracks, the mess. Grace works just like that. It exposes our sin … but only so we can run to the One who cleanses us. Here's how God puts it: James 4:6 But God gives us even more grace, as the Scriptures say, 'God is against the proud, but he is kind to the humble. (ICB) The proud resist the light. They'd rather stay in the shadows, pretending that everything's fine. But the humble let God's grace shine in. They admit their weaknesses. They confess their sin. And in that place of humility, God doesn't condemn – He pours out His kindness. That's the paradox of grace. The lower you bow, the more He lifts you up. The less you cling to your own strength, the more His power rests on you. So don't be afraid of the light. Let grace reveal your need. Because the God who humbles also heals … and in Christ, He gives you more grace than you could ever imagine. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Mondays can feel tough, can't they? The alarm goes off, the week stretches out in front of you, and all you want to do is hit snooze. But here's the truth – how you begin your week shapes how you'll finish it. Yep, it can be tough mustering up your motivation on a Monday morning. But think about it: there's something noble, something enriching about getting into it again (whatever your "it" happens to be) and doing your very best, wouldn't you agree? There's something about putting in the effort that returns its own reward. Which, I guess, is why Henry Ford once said: "Chop your own wood and it'll warm you twice." First, when you put in the effort, and again when you enjoy the reward. That's true of firewood – and it's true of life. Proverbs 14:23 In all hard work there is profit, but talk only makes a man poor. (BBE) There are no shortcuts to a fruitful life. Endless daydreaming and talking cannot replace the simple, faithful act of getting on with it. Hard work may not always feel glamorous, but God's designed it to bless us – not just in what it produces, but in what it shapes in us. And here's the deeper truth. In Christ, your work is never wasted. The Apostle Paul wrote centuries later that whatever we do – whether in word or deed – we do it for the Lord (Colossians 3:17). That means your Monday morning emails, your commute, your unseen acts of service … all of it becomes sacred when done for Him. So today, don't just talk about what you'll do. Put your hand to it. Chop the wood. Work diligently. And let the warmth of God's purpose in Christ carry you through the week ahead. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

We live in a world that offers a thousand different saviours. Politicians promise to rescue the economy. Technology claims it'll solve every problem. Self-help gurus insist that they can fix your life if only you'll buy into their program. But in the end, each and every one of them falls short. Back in 2008, the global financial crisis shook the world. Banks collapsed. Markets crumbled. For years, people had trusted that the system would always keep them safe. But in the space of just a few short weeks, trillions of dollars vanished. What everyone thought was secure … wasn't. Now listen to this: Isaiah 43:11-12 I myself am the LORD, and there is no other Saviour. I am the one who spoke to you, saved you, and told you those things. It was not some stranger who was with you. You are my witnesses, and I am God." (This is what the LORD himself said.)' Crystal clear, isn't it? There is one God. One Saviour. One Redeemer. Israel's story was full of moments when they chased after false gods, only to be disappointed. And God reminds them: "It was Me. It was always Me." And then – centuries later – that truth took on flesh and blood in Jesus. He is God's rescue plan. He is salvation. Not wealth. Not power. Not politics. Only Christ. Whatever else you may have put your faith in, know this: if it hasn't already failed you, one day it will. So, when everything else around you feels shaky, don't put your trust in temporary saviours. Put it where it belongs – in the only One who never fails: Jesus. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

I wish I could tell you that life is simple. But it ain't. It's complex, it's messy, and the future is far from certain. Not even tomorrow is promised. All we have is today. So, what will you do with it? A few years ago, a research team tracked hikers in dense forests who had neither a compass nor a GPS. Unsurprisingly, almost every one of them ended up walking in circles. Because without a fixed reference point, we all lose our way – no matter how hard we try to stay straight. And exactly the same is true in the uncertain, complex, messy lives we each live. Which is why God means to give us that much-needed reference point. Deuteronomy 13:4 You must follow the LORD your God. Respect him. Obey his commands and do what he tells you. Serve the LORD your God, and never leave him. That's not complicated. In fact, it's pretty clear. God's people were about to enter a land full of idols and false promises. And His word to them was simple: Don't drift. Don't wander round in circles. Fix your eyes on Me. Fast-forward, and the same truth echoes in Jesus' call: "Follow Me." Not casually, not part-time – but fully. He doesn't just ask for our Sunday mornings. He asks for our lives. And here's the good news. We don't have to follow Him in our own strength. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now leads us, empowers us, and keeps us on track. So, if you've been drifting … stop. Turn. Fix your eyes back on Jesus. Because only in Him will you walk straight, strong, and sure. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Have you ever noticed how stubborn we can be? We sketch out our five-year plan, knowing exactly how life should unfold… and even though, deep down, we know that our plans don't always play out the way we think they should, we still find it maddening when things just don't go our way. Take Steve Jobs. At thirty he was fired from Apple, the very company he'd founded. By all accounts, it was a humiliating experience. But years later, he admitted that being fired freed him to think more creatively. That setback led to Pixar, and eventually his return to Apple – where he reshaped the world of technology. What appeared to be the end of a promising career turned out to be an essential stepping stone to success. Proverbs 19:20-21 Listen to advice and accept discipline; then you, too, will become wise. People might make many plans, but what the LORD says is what will happen. That cuts straight to the heart, doesn't it? Wisdom means admitting we don't know it all. It means being humble enough to listen – to God's Word, to godly counsel, even to the discipline that stings. Because in the end, our clever strategies and carefully laid plans aren't what determine the outcome. God's purposes stand. Always. And in Christ, we see that truth in the flesh. Men planned His downfall. Judas betrayed Him. The leaders schemed against Him. And yet through the cross and resurrection, God's greater plan – our salvation – triumphed. So yes, plan wisely. But hold your plans loosely. Because in the end, the only plan that matters is God's … and that plan is Jesus. That's His Word. Fresh … for you … today.

No matter the circumstance, one of the hardest things to do is to keep on going when every fibre of your being is screaming at you to stop. So, when was the last time you were tempted to give up? In 1968, during the Mexico City Olympics, a marathon runner from Tanzania named John Stephen Akhwari fell badly, injuring his leg. Everyone expected him to quit. But hours after the winner had finished, Akhwari limped into the stadium, bloodied and exhausted, and determined to cross the line. When asked why he hadn't stopped, he said, "My country didn't send me 10,000 miles to start the race. They sent me 10,000 miles to finish it." That's the power of perseverance. And it's exactly what God's talking about here: Hebrews 10:35-36 So don't lose the courage that you had in the past. Your courage will be rewarded richly. You must be patient. After you have done what God wants, you will get what he promised you. Time and again, life hits us with setbacks. Our faith is sorely tested. And yet, God calls us not merely to start, but to finish – with courage, with patience, with trust. It's not about gritting your teeth and pushing through in your own strength. It's about holding on to Christ, who has already run the race before us. He endured the cross. He pressed through the shame. And now He reigns in glory. And the very same power – the very same resurrection power – that raised Him from the dead is available to you, here and now, to get you through to the end. So don't give up. Your faith in Jesus will be rewarded. Not because you're strong enough, but because He is faithful enough. In Him, the finish line is certain and the prize is eternal. That's God's Word. Have you noticed how the smallest bits of advice from your parents end up staying with you for life? It's uncanny how, decades later, something happens and you hear them speaking as though directly into that situation. A teacher once asked a class of top CEOs what had influenced them most growing up. Was it books, mentors, training? Almost all of them said the same thing: "My parents' voice in my head." Wisdom passed down, often simple, often ordinary – but wisdom that had shaped who they'd become. That's exactly what the book of Proverbs in the Bible is all about – godly wisdom passed down through everyday voices. Check this out: Proverbs 1:8-9 My son, listen to your father when he corrects you, and don't ignore what your mother teaches you. What you learn from your parents will bring you honour and respect, like a crown or a gold medal. See, wisdom isn't abstract. It comes to us through the ordinary people God places in our lives. Parents. Friends. Mentors. And ultimately, it comes to us perfectly in Jesus, who is the very wisdom of God in human. A crown and a gold medal – symbols of honour and achievement. God's wisdom doesn't weigh you down. It lifts you up. It adorns you. It gives you dignity. It makes you shine in a dark world. So don't despise the voices of wisdom around you. Don't shrug off correction. Don't ignore the people God uses to shape you. And above all, don't miss Jesus – because in Him, wisdom isn't just advice. It's life. When you wear His wisdom, the world sees something different in you: God's glory reflected in the everyday. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Have you ever had one of those moments when you aimed small, but the outcome turned out to be way bigger than you imagined? I sure have, and I suspect that you have too! When I started out in the ministry of Christianityworks (the ministry that produces Fresh) it was a case of "last one out, turn out the lights". So I prayed – man, I prayed – prayers that to me, at the time, seemed like big, impossible prayers. But with the benefit of over two decades of hindsight, seeing all that God has done, I can see now how tiny they really were. We often pray small prayers, don't we? We hedge our bets, we aim low, because deep down we're not sure if God will really show up. And yet Paul, sitting in prison, writes this: Ephesians 3:20 With God's power working in us, he can do much, much more than anything we can ask or think of. Did you catch that? Much, much more. Beyond what you can ask. Beyond what you can imagine. This isn't wishful thinking. It's God's power – resurrection power – working in us through Christ. Now, does that mean life will be perfect? No. Paul wasn't writing this from a beach chair sipping iced tea. He was chained up in prison. But even there, he knew: God is still able to do more. More grace. More strength. More breakthrough. More glory through the church, through Christ, forever. So whatever you're facing today – don't shrink your prayers. Don't limit your hope. Because the God who raised Jesus from the dead is still doing more than you can ask or imagine. And He's doing it in you. That's His Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Sometimes life just doesn't go the way you'd planned. You map it all out – the career, the family, the retirement dream – and then out of nowhere something knocks you off course. Before inventing the light bulb, Thomas Edison had had thousands of failed experiments. Reporters mocked him, "Why do you keep going after so many disasters?" His reply? "I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." What others thought of as failure … He saw as part of the plan. God's people, back in the Prophet Jeremiah's day, must've felt like failures too – dispossessed of their land, exiled in Babylon, far from home, far from the temple, the dwelling place of their allegedly invincible God, far from everything that had once given them security. But right in the middle of their pain, God speaks: Jeremiah 29:11 "I say this because I know the plans that I have for you." This message is from the Lord." I have good plans for you. I don't plan to hurt you. I plan to give you hope and a good future."  That wasn't written as some catchy Instagram meme. It was written to a broken, displaced people. Yes, Israel was eventually restored to the Promised Land. But God was ultimately promising Himself as well. He was promising that His good plans would one day be fulfilled – plans that came to life in Jesus. Because in Him, you already have the future God promised. Eternal life. Forgiveness. Hope that cannot be shaken. So when your own plans fail … don't panic. God's plan in Christ is still on track. And His plan is always good. That's His Word. Fresh … for you … today.

What will they think? Will they be disappointed? Am I letting people down? If you've ever wrestled with those questions, you're not alone. The fear of others doesn't just speak—it shouts. It's a fear that's destroyed many a life. In the ultra-high-pressure glare of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, with seemingly the whole world looking on, superstar gymnast Simone Biles shocked everyone when she withdrew from multiple events to protect her mental health. The critics were quick to question her mental toughness. But she didn't cave to their voices—she listened to what she knew was right. Later, she said "I've to put my pride aside. I have to do what's right for me and focus on my mental health." That's not weakness. That's courage. Proverbs 29:25 The fear of others lays a snare, but one who trusts in the Lord is secure. (NRSV) Fear of others is a trap. It looks like approval, but it becomes a cage. You start living for likes, for praise, for expectations, instead of walking in the truth that God's placed inside you. If you've ever been there, if you're there now, you know exactly what I mean. But trusting God … well, that's where real strength begins. You stop being pulled in every direction and start standing secure—even when people don't understand. Simone Biles didn't please everyone. But she chose something better: integrity, health, and truth. That's the fruit of trusting God—not public applause, but inner peace. So, question: Are you living for them—or for Him? The fear of others lays a snare, but one who trusts in the Lord is secure.  That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Life throws a lot our way, doesn't it?  And yet, you can survive an awful lot if you have hope. But take that hope away—I mean, really take it away—and you stop moving. Stop trying. Stop caring. Hope isn't just a nice-to-have. It's oxygen. In 1952, Florence Chadwick tried to swim the 26 miles from the California coast to Catalina Island. Partway through, a thick fog set in. She couldn't see the shoreline. After 15 hours, exhausted and disoriented, she gave up—only to discover that she was less than a mile from the finish. Later, she said, "I think if I could have seen the shore, I would have made it." I don't think any of us doubts that. Her problem wasn't a lack of endurance. Her problem was that she'd lost hope. 1 Peter 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God has great mercy, and because of his mercy he gave us a new life. This new life brings us a living hope through Jesus Christ's resurrection from death. This isn't "cross your fingers" hope. This is living hope—anchored in something already accomplished: Jesus rose from the dead. And that … that changes everything. It means that no matter how deep the fog gets, the shore is real. The finish line is there. You're not imagining it. You're not just surviving. You're headed somewhere. And that kind of hope isn't just for dying—it's for living. It gives you courage to love again, to fight again, to believe again. You can keep going. Because Jesus lives, so does your hope. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

We plan for the future as though we're somehow in control. You know, … tomorrow's meeting, next month's goals, next year's vacation, where we want to be in five years' time. But then life shows up uninvited. A diagnosis. A phone call. A headline. Suddenly, tomorrow's not as solid as we thought. On the 11th of March 2011, commuters in Japan boarded their morning trains … just as they did on every other day. Lunches packed. Texts sent. Appointments to keep. But then, at precisely 2:46 p.m., a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck. 9.0! It triggered a massive tsunami, killing over 15,000; altering lives, destinies, and eternities forever. Not a single person that morning expected it to be their last. But that's life, and that's why this proverb hits so hard: Proverbs 27:1 Don't brag about what you will do tomorrow, because you don't know what will happen between now and then. Look, that's not anti-planning. It's anti-pride. God's point here is to remind us of something that we'd rather forget: we don't own tomorrow. It's easy to live as though our time is unlimited –  as though we can delay obedience, forgiveness, change, or even surrender—because "there's always later." But later isn't guaranteed. What is guaranteed? Now. This moment. This breath. So don't put off what matters most. Don't delay the conversation, the prayer, the decision to come home to God. Live like today counts—because it does. And when you hold tomorrow loosely, you'll grip today a whole lot tighter. Don't brag about what you will do tomorrow, because you don't know what will happen between now and then.  That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Missed trains. Missed phone calls. Missed chances. Most of us know what it's like to be just a little too late—and how it feels when the moment's gone. Some windows don't stay open forever. In 1986, Halley's Comet passed close enough to the Earth to be visible to the naked eye. Crowds gathered. People camped out. But most said, "Eh, maybe next time."  Yeah, okay, but the next time wouldn't be until 2061. A moment came … and went. For most, it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance but, for whatever reason, they missed it. Full stop. End of story. Okay, no big deal, you might be thinking to yourself. Agreed. But what if you missed your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to alter the course of your eternity - forever and ever, without end? That'd be a tragedy of epic proportions, wouldn't you say? Isaiah 55:6 So you should look for the Lord before it is too late. You should call to him now, while he is near. God isn't hiding. He's not playing games. He's here. Right now. But through the Prophet Isaiah, He's giving us a clear and present warning: seek Him now—while you still can. Because life has windows. Moments. Seasons. And when your heart stirs—when something in you knows that it's time to reach out to God—that's not random. That's Him drawing you near. Don't brush it off. Don't say, "I'll deal with that later." Later isn't promised. The call here isn't complicated. It's not "clean yourself up" or "figure everything out." It's simple. Call to Him. Search for Jesus while He's still near. Because when He shows up in your story, absolutely the wrong response … is no response. The window's open. Don't miss it. That's God's Word. There's a very good reason why mountain climbers drive metal stakes into the rock. It's not for the climb up. It's for when things go wrong—the wind, the slip, the sudden drop. When everything gives way, they need something that won't. In 1940, engineers began building the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington State. It looked strong. It stretched nearly a mile. It was praised for its sleek design. But they didn't calculate adequately for the wind. Just four months after it opened, it twisted apart and collapsed in spectacular fashion. Why? Because the foundations weren't strong enough to keep the whole thing intact. I wonder, how often have you made the same mistake? You have some great idea, you race forward into what seems good to you, but again, you've underestimated the headwinds that inevitably strike. There is an alternative. Isaiah 26:4 Trust in the Lord forever, because the Lord is the Rock, the Lord will always protect us.  It's easy to trust God when the going's easy. But this verse isn't for those easy times. It's for when the winds pick up—when what you thought was stable starts to twist and creak. Trust in the Lord forever, because the Lord is the Rock. Not a theory. Not a feeling. Not a Sunday-school slogan. Your Rock—unshakable, immovable, forever. You don't have to be strong. You don't have to know how it ends. You just need to be anchored. So drive your stake in deep and say, No matter what shakes—I will not be moved. Because your Rock won't be. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Have you ever woken up parched— with a dry mouth, a scratchy throat, craving water like it's the only thing that matters? Physical thirst is brutal. But soul-thirst? That's a different kind of ache. One you can't quench with just a glass of water. Back in 1901, amidst the blazing heat of Western Australia's goldfields, prospectors had to dig deep—sometimes hundreds of feet—just to hit water. Many of them died trying. Not because there was no water, but because they didn't know where to dig—or they gave up too soon. The desert wasn't just hot. It was lethal. Something that King David of Israel knew all too well: Psalm 63:1 God, you are my God. I am searching so hard to find you. I am thirsty for you like someone in a dry, dry land where there is no water. David wasn't merely being poetic. He was literally in the wilderness, running for his life. No temple. No crowds. No comfort. Just dry, lonely, desperate terrain. And yet—what did he want more than water? God. Because when your soul's parched, when you've tried everything and yet nothing seems capable of satisfying that deep thirst—God is the only one who can revive you. Not wealth. Not comfort. Not religion. Not rituals. A deep, genuine relationship with God Himself. Look, the question isn't whether or not God's there. Of course He is. The question is—are you digging in the right place? Or are you perhaps too tired to search? God doesn't hide from the thirsty. He satisfies them. So if your soul is dry today, begin with this cry: "God, you are my God." And don't stop searching. Because that's His Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Have you ever noticed how sometimes the smallest things end up saving the day? A single bolt holding a plane's wing. A single match lighting a fire in the freezing cold. Sometimes just one small thing changes everything. Back in 1829, a man named George Wilson was convicted of robbing a U.S. mail carrier and sentenced to death. But then—unexpectedly—the President of the United States issued him a full pardon. You'd think that'd be the end of it, right? But Wilson refused the pardon, saying that he didn't want it. The case went all the way to the US Supreme Court which finally ruled: "A pardon is just a piece of paper unless it's accepted." Wilson was executed. Which brings me to this. Jesus said: John 3:14-15 Moses lifted up the snake in the desert. It is the same with the Son of Man. He must be lifted up too. Then everyone who believes in him can have eternal life. It sounds odd at first—Jesus comparing Himself to a bronze snake. But back in the Book of Numbers, God sent a plague of venomous snakes upon Israel as punishment for their sin, and as a result they were dying from snake bites. Then God told Moses to lift up a bronze serpent on a pole. Anyone who looked at it—lived. What Jesus is saying is this: That's Me. Lifted up on a cross. Not for show. Not for religion. But so that anyone who turns to Me, who believes in Me, lives. The pardon has already been signed in Christ's blood on that Cross. The gift is waiting. But it only saves you when you receive it. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.  

Have you considered yourself to be "special"? Not in a selfish way, not with an over-inflated sense of self-entitlement, but in the knowledge that you're destined to have an impact in this world; that there's something that you and you alone are meant to do. When I was young, my parents had a special dinner service - plates, bowls, cups and saucers – and crystal glasses and silver cutlery that were set apart for use only when special guests visited. Day-to-day, we used the ordinary plates, glasses and cutlery. Fine, but let me tell you, when those guests arrived … man, that dinner service, the crystal, the silver, made it so special. And that's the sense that the word "holiness" carries with it. It means to be set apart for a special purpose … something that God means for you to be: holy. 2 Thessalonians 2:13 Brothers and sisters, you are people the Lord loves. And we always thank God for you. That's what we should do, because God chose you to be some of the first people to be saved. You are saved by the Spirit making you holy and by your faith in the truth. You and I are loved by God with a love that goes beyond words. Yet, given the mistakes and blunders we make along the way, we often don't feel all that holy. But that's the point. Just as the dishes don't clean themselves, the silver service doesn't make itself sparkle, it's not our job to make ourselves holy. You are saved by the Spirit making you holy and by your faith in the truth. Believe. Let the Holy Spirit have His way in you. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Something that bothers a lot of people about churches is how they behave. You see church splits where half the congregation walks out the door, sometimes even battling out their differences in court. Really? Is that how it's meant to be? In the early 1700s, a small band of religious refugees from Moravia (in Czechoslovakia) fled persecution and found shelter on the Saxon estate of Count Nikolaus von Zinzendorf. At first, tensions ran high among the diverse group but on August 13, 1727, something remarkable happened: during a communion service, they experienced what they later called an "outpouring of grace." Divisions dissolved, love abounded, and unity replaced strife. From that moment, everything changed. Within decades, these once-scattered exiles sent missionaries to the Caribbean, Africa, and the Americas—arguably igniting one of the greatest missionary movements since the book of Acts. Speaking of the book of Acts: Acts 4:31,33 … when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness … And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. (ESV) Here's the thing. When we allow our personal wants and desires to rule our lives, when we insist on being right … it's only going to end one way - in division and strife. But when we allow God's Holy Spirit to fill us to overflowing, just as happened with the apostles, we'll be overcome by His power and His grace. Hmm. Grace. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

We each tend to take our natural gifts and abilities for granted. After all, we've lived with them all our lives; surely they're nothing special; surely everyone's capable of doing what I can do. And yet, nothing could be further from the truth. Some people are extraordinarily gifted with a gentleness and kindness that goes way above and beyond. Yet, in comparing themselves to some of the high-flying, up-front people around them, they think to themselves 'if only I could be as talented as them'. Me? Sure, I try to be gentle and kind; I have to work at it because I'm more your crash through brick walls, get things done kind of guy. Do you see how this silly comparison game plays itself out? Back when God had commanded Moses to build a tabernacle, a special tent where His Presence would dwell during Israel's upcoming forty-year journey through the wilderness, this is what He said: Exodus 31:3-5 I have filled Bezalel with the Spirit of God—I have given him the skill and knowledge to do all kinds of things. He is a very good designer. And he can make things from gold, silver, and bronze. He can cut and set beautiful jewels. And he can work with wood. He can do all kinds of work. So, why only Bezalel? Why not every other Tom, Dick or Harry? Because Bezalel is the one whom God had thus gifted, enabled and empowered to do those special things. And let me tell you, when He fills you with His Spirit - the Holy Spirit - your boring old gifts and abilities become incredibly special, extraordinarily powerful in His hands. No one else can do what God has gifted you, enabled you, and empowered you to do. No one. That's His Word. Fresh … for you … today.

I don't know about you, but from where I sit it's getting harder and harder to remain faithful to Christ; to speak boldly that which we believe; even just to keep believing it in the face of pressures that demand we conform to a new, godless order. How, deep down in our souls, can we remain faithful to Jesus, hmm? Mariam Farahat was a Palestinian Christian who, under pressure, converted to Islam but later returned to Christ in secret, though doing so meant certain death under local law. When discovered, she was imprisoned and brutally interrogated. Despite threats and physical abuse, she refused to deny Jesus again. Ultimately, she was executed by extremists in 2010. Whilst her story's largely untold outside underground church circles, she's remembered by believers in the region as one who, like the martyrs of old, stood firm under torture and death rather than renounce Christ. That sort of strength seems inhuman, otherworldly. That's because it is! This is what the Apostle Paul wrote to his friends in 1st-century Ephesus: Ephesians 3:16 I ask the Father with his great glory to give you the power to be strong in your spirits. He will give you that strength through his Spirit. That wasn't merely some spiritual platitude. It struck home to these Christians living under constant cultural, spiritual and economic pressures that made their faith in Jesus costly. Whatever assails you - temptation and sin, addiction, outside pressures to conform to increasingly godless social norms - know this: The Father will give you the power to be strong in your spirit. Okay, so some people believe in God. Some even believe that Jesus was and is the Son of God who became a man, died on the Cross, rose again and ascended into heaven. Good-o. But now what? How is anybody supposed to know Him, draw close to Him, experience His Presence, given that He's no longer with us? Answer me that! The pioneering English nurse and social reformer Florence Nightingale is widely recognised as the founder of modern nursing. In the late 1800s, long bedridden and rarely seen in public, she wielded her spirit of resolve through her letters. From her London sickroom, she wrote countless letters — to politicians, hospital boards, military leaders. Though frail in body, her spirit carried weight across great distances. Through her, sanitation systems in India were reformed, hospital design in Europe was reshaped, military health policy was influenced worldwide. People who never met her nevertheless experienced her presence as though she stood in their very offices pressing for change. All of which serves as a reminder that spirit can traverse miles, making presence felt without physical proximity. Said Jesus to His disciples, just before He left them: John 14:16-17 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever. The Helper is the Spirit of truth. The people of the world cannot accept him, because they don't see him or know him. But you know him. He lives with you, and he will be in you. When you put your faith in Jesus, His very Presence dwells in you by His Spirit; God's Spirit, who can traverse any distance to make His Presence felt, without the need for physical proximity. We tend to take the air that we each breath in and out 23,000 times a day very much for granted. And yet, without it you and I couldn't survive for more than a few minutes. Every breath you take sucks in a trillion, trillion oxygen molecules that rush into your lungs, cross into your bloodstream, binding to your haemoglobin, and reach every cell in your body in less than 20 seconds. Breath isn't just air — it's the spark of life coursing through you moment by moment. And yet, the one thing science has never been able to achieve - not for want of trying, I might add - is to create life from non-living matter. Never! But … Genesis 2:7 … the LORD God took dust from the ground and made a man. He breathed the breath of life into the man's nose, and the man became a living thing. The original Hebrew word for "breath," ruach, is also used throughout the Old Testament to refer to the Holy Spirit. It has the same meaning as the Greek word pneuma, used to denote the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. Both words carry with them the sense of breath or wind - invisible, powerful, life-giving. And just as God breathed life into your body (the only One who could), so the Holy Spirit breathes life deep within your spirit. Like you, I've travelled through times where I felt like a zombie, the walking dead, as though the world had drained all the life out of me. But each time, when I've turned to God for help, His Spirit - His ruach, His pneuma - has breathed life back into my soul. It's the Spirit who brings life. In fact, He's the only One who can! Life can be a tad chaotic at times. Making order out of the things that unexpectedly confront you, that unsettle you, can be a challenge. But behind the chaos lies a hidden order … if only we'll go looking for it. Science has made huge strides forward since Isaac Newton posited his laws of motion back in 1687. In fact, the more science has advanced, the more evident it's become that the universe is governed by mathematical constants so finely tuned that even the smallest change would plunge creation into complete chaos. If gravity were only a fraction stronger, stars would burn out almost instantly: Slightly weaker, and galaxies would never form. The same is true of the speed of light, the charge of electrons, and everything else. Without doubt, this extraordinary precision — often referred to as the fine-tuning of the universe — points to a God of order, not chaos. Genesis 1:1-3 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. (ESV) Do you imagine that the God who created this whole universe can't bring a bit of order to the chaos of this world, to the messy things you travel through in life? The same Holy Spirit who hovered over the deep, who created everything from nothing, who fine-tuned the universe, is the One who, despite all that the world shouts at you, despite all the evidence that confronts you, will bring a wondrous order to your chaos. There's an old maxim that politicians use in deciding on policies that'll win them the next election: if in doubt, back self-interest. In other words, pander to the self-interest of others and they'll vote for you. Sadly, self-interest is used to justify all kinds of abuse and injustice as we collectively shift the boundary markers that separate right and wrong. During the so-called Highland Clearances in 18th and 19th century Scotland, powerful landowners forced thousands of poor tenant farmers off their ancestral lands to make way for more profitable sheep farming. Boundaries were literally redrawn, villages were destroyed, and people who'd lived there for generations were driven into poverty, exile, or emigration. It was, in essence, the moving of "ancient boundary stones"—ignoring heritage, community, and justice for the sake of profit. The vulnerable—often widows, orphans, and the poor—were left without fields or homes. Proverbs 23:10 Do not remove an ancient landmark or encroach on the fields of orphans, for their redeemer is strong; he will plead their cause against you. (NRSV) Self-interest is a powerful motivator for each one of us – perhaps the most powerful of all. So long as we're comfortable, who cares what happens to everyone else? Who cares about their suffering? In this verse, God warns us against greed, exploitation, and taking advantage of the vulnerable by shifting boundaries for selfish gain. Greed that displaces the powerless corrodes both justice and society. And God will see that, in the end, His justice is done. Don't move the ancient landmarks. Don't start calling that which is wrong, right. That's God's warning, and … That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Our capacity for self-delusion, for being led by the nose by this conspiracy theory or that radical dogma, is remarkable. Just look around. Amidst the swill of social media, many are being sucked into the deep vortex of delusion. Imagine you meet someone who's convinced that the earth is flat or that aeroplanes spray chemicals to control people's minds. So you patiently sit with them, showing them NASA photos, explaining basic physics, even quoting trusted scientists. But no matter what evidence you bring, your friend just shakes their head and says, "That's what they want you to believe." Your words of wisdom and truth wash over them like water off a duck's back—completely wasted. What do you do with that? Proverbs 23:9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the good sense of your words.  ESV Fool is such a harsh word. But sometimes, it's also the right one. Doing what I do, I receive a lot of hate mail from people who call me all sorts of names, accusing me of all sorts of things. It really bothered me at first and I'd spend hours writing to each one, trying to shine the light of God's love into their hearts. But can I tell you, not a single one of them came round. And harsh as it may sound, eventually you have to heed God's advice: Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the good sense of your words. That's God's Word. The combined talent of the more than eight billion people walking the planet right now is truly staggering. And yet what proportion of that talent goes to waste, simply because the world doesn't value or acknowledge it? Think about it. The loss of all that talent to the collective human enterprise is mind-blowing! So many people have been damaged by the rough and tumble of life in a world where everyone's clamouring for attention and success; where, because how they look or where they come from, their value is diminished in the eyes of others. You have to ask yourself, why do we do that? And why does God allow it? Proverbs 15:3-4 The LORD sees what happens everywhere. He watches everyone, good and evil. Kind words are like a life-giving tree, but lying words will crush your spirit. Make no mistake. None of this has escaped God's attention. The terrible things we do to others happen right under His nose. God sees the evil, and He will deal with it when the time comes. But in the meantime, there's something that you and I can do that'll make a huge difference in countless people's lives: Kind words are like a life-giving tree. The original Hebrew language paints a beautiful picture of those kind words - a healing tongue. Speech that restores, soothes, and encourages brings vitality, growth and blessing - like a life-giving tree. It's remarkable how little encouragement some people actually need to begin the process of becoming all that God made them to be. We live in a world that loves to hand out medals and awards - in school, academia, sport, entertainment … you name it. So each year, like clockwork, Hollywood rolls out the red carpet for the Academy Awards; the Oscars, as they're known — a night drenched in glitz and glamour. Flashing cameras, glittering gowns, tailored tuxedos, and million-dollar smiles line the stage where the world's biggest stars gather. Those gold statuettes gleam under dazzling lights as limousines queue outside and champagne flows inside. It's the entertainment industry's crown jewel — a spectacle of elegance, luxury, and prestige that captures the imagination of millions watching on across the globe. Yet in a recent interview, Hollywood A-Lister and dual Academy Award winner Denzel Washington said, "Man gives the award. God gives the reward. On my last day, the Oscars won't do me any good." Hebrews 11:24-26 Moses grew up and became a man. He refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose not to enjoy the pleasures of sin that last such a short time. Instead, he chose to suffer with God's people. He did this because he had faith. He thought it was better to suffer for the Messiah than to have all the treasures of Egypt. He was waiting for the reward that God would give him. We can be so busy chasing the world's accolades and awards that we lose sight of the crown of life that comes to the one who suffers for Christ, who endures to the end. Aim for the crown, not the trophy, because while the trophy lasts for a time, in Christ, the crown of life is yours for eternity. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

In the affluent West where I live, when there's a tragedy in another Western nation – a school shooting, a train accident, a terrorist incident –  it's all over the news. But the wars and terrorism raging in Africa never get a mention, despite the suffering and carnage. Most have never even heard of the plight of the dispossessed and the stateless, like the Rohingya minority in Myanmar. Why is that? In an episode of the American Drama, The West Wing, an aide says to the President: "The idea that some lives are worth more than others is the root of all that's wrong with the world." The President replies quietly: "Yes, it is." That cuts deep because, in reality, that's how the world operates — some lives valued, others discarded, some lifted high, others overlooked. And if we're honest, sometimes we think like that too. But the Apostle Paul tells us something radically different:. 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. (ESV) In God's economy, no life is worth more than another. Christ didn't die only for the powerful and ignore the weak. He died for all. His sacrifice levels the ground at the foot of the cross. And if Christ's love compels us, then we cannot rank people by status, race, income, usefulness, or background. To live for Jesus means to see every life through His eyes — equally precious, equally in need of grace, equally worth our love. The idea that some lives matter less is the root cause of all that is wrong with the world. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

We all know that feeling: waiting for the "perfect time" before we act. But life doesn't work that way. Opportunities slip by while we hesitate and before long, the moment's passed altogether. Taking the first step into something new is daunting. Equally, taking the thousandth step in something that's been dragging on for an eternity is exhausting. Wherever you are on your journey, procrastination seems alluring indeed. Ecclesiastes 11:4-6 He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap. As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything. In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good. (ESV) Ahh, it's too windy, better not sow. Look at those storm clouds. Not a good time to harvest. Do you see? Wherever you are on the journey, procrastination is always an option. And yet, the faster you do the hard things you want to avoid, the faster you'll receive the good things you actually want. Yes, there are risks and uncertainties along the way, but just as you don't know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you don't know the work of God who makes everything. God is on this journey with you, so stop procrastinating. Start sowing. That's His Word. Fresh … for you … today.

We live in a world addicted to grand gestures. Social media loves it — the dramatic donation, the public apology, the grand act of kindness. But behind the spotlight, it's the small, quiet choices that matter most. The truth is: obedience doesn't trend, it transforms. So, imagine that a young man saves for months to buy his mother a beautiful gift. But when he gives it to her, she smiles and says, 'What I really wanted was for you to spend time with me.' He gave her something costly, but he missed the one thing her heart longed for. Isn't that how we can be with God sometimes?" 1 Samuel 15:22 But Samuel answered, "Which pleases the LORD more: burnt offerings and sacrifices or obeying his commands? It is better to obey the LORD than to offer sacrifices to him. It is better to listen to him than to offer the fat from rams." Samuel spoke those words to King Saul of Israel after he'd disobeyed God. Well, Saul had partially obeyed, but in the end partial obedience is still disobedience. It's so easy to go through the motions, sing songs, lift your hands in worship, drop cash into the offering … and yet, for our hearts still not to be truly "all in". And how can you tell if you're all in? By what you do, by how you live your life. Sacrifices cost you things. Obedience costs you your life. It is better to obey the LORD than to offer sacrifices to him. It is better to listen to him than to offer the fat from rams. In truth, obedience is the highest form of worship. That's God's Word. Your journey from this point through to the end of your life still holds a good many opportunities to walk away from your eternity with God, as the world tries to dupe you into believing that it's all about the here and now; that heaven and hell are merely a figment of your imagination. Here's the plain truth, a truth that I believe with every fibre of my being. God is all-loving, but also just. We've each fallen short of His standard of holy perfection, meaning that none of us can ever deserve or earn our place with Him for all eternity. That's why He sent Jesus into this world - His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him wouldn't perish, but have the gift of eternal life. It's a free gift of grace paid for with a terrible cost - the life of Jesus, crucified on that Cross for you and me. That's the truth. Many believe that truth - perhaps you do too. Yet the opportunities to stumble, to squander this free gift between now and then, are many. But that's no surprise to God. Jude 24-25 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. (ESV) God is more than able to keep you from stumbling. Trust Him. Draw close to Him. Depend on Him. Because He has a plan: to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy. The surest anchor for your soul is the joy of knowing the God who saves, sustains, and who will finally bring you home. That's His Word. Fresh … for you … today.

You don't have to look far to see it—people are desperate for something real. We're drowning in headlines, chasing dopamine hits on our screens, and yet lying awake at night with an ache in our souls. The false promise of joy is what leads so many people to go looking for it in all the wrong places … which goes a long way to explaining our obsession with our smartphones, hoping for yet another dopamine hit that ultimately falls so far short of real joy. So, let's take a different tack here today, you and I: 1 Peter 1:8 You have not seen Christ, but still you love him. You can't see him now, but you believe in him. You are filled with a wonderful and heavenly joy that cannot be explained. The struggles of those to whom Peter was writing were real, painful, and unjust—ostracism, slander, threats, and possibly the beginnings of state hostility. They weren't being fed to the lions just yet. This was about the daily grinding cost of living faithfully in a hostile culture. And into that, Peter speaks of a joy that their enemies could never steal. "Though you haven't seen Him, you love Him … you're filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy". Not some fragile joy of comfort or approval that perishes like figs left in the sun. No, it's the fruit of the Spirit ripened in the heat of trial, rooted in Christ. The world's joy fades quickly. But the Spirit's joy? It endures through suffering. Because of Jesus, it shines brightest in the darkness. Let your joy be complete. Jesus. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Achieving lasting change in your life ain't easy. You want to ditch some bad habit and replace it with a good one, but what a struggle that can be. Yep, producing lasting fruit in your life - good fruit - is quite the challenge! Fruit's a great way to understand the good things we want to cultivate in our lives. Because we know, inherently, that fruit is good. I mean, strawberries, raspberries, and figs are wonderful, aren't they – beautiful, sweet, bursting with promise. And yet, their beauty is short-lived. Strawberries begin to spoil within a day, raspberries collapse into mould almost overnight, and figs last scarcely longer. Their sweetness fades as quickly as it appears. It's the same with the joy we so long for - fleeting, fragile, gone before you know it. But here, the Apostle Paul speaks of a different kind of fruit … the sort that lasts. Galatians 5:22-23 … the fruit that the Spirit produces in a person's life is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. That's quite the list, and prominent amongst it is the fruit of joy, because frankly, unless you're enjoying them, new habits are impossible to sustain, wouldn't you agree? Like strawberries, raspberries and figs, every item on that list is inherently good. But would you please notice with me that the fruit Paul speaks of isn't fruit that we grow out of our own strength, but the fruit that the Spirit produces in our lives. And right up there, amidst all the good fruit that God wants to cultivate in your life … is joy. Complete, abundant, eternal joy. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

What are the things, the experiences, the possessions, the aspirations, that you value most? Come on, what are they? Now, let me ask you - and please be brutally honest with yourself here - do they actually fulfil you? Are they delivering what you'd hoped they would … or not? Francis of Assisi was born into incredible wealth and privilege - luxury, fine clothes, banquets, influence. But after being wounded in battle, during his long recovery, he began questioning the emptiness of luxury and privilege. He found himself drawn instead to prayer, solitude and, of all things, serving lepers — people his old life would have despised. Following a profound encounter with Christ, he renounced his inheritance and instead chose a life of radical poverty, preaching, and service to the poor. As much as we may aspire to wealth, comfort, and influence … deep down we know that no matter how pleasurable they appear, they can never satisfy the deepest longings of our soul. Writes the Apostle Paul to the church in Rome: Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. That was about some disputes in the early church, but it also carries with it this universal truth: that life was never about the things of this world. They're impostors at best, cruel plunders at worst. Francis exchanged the fleeting pleasures of this world for the deeper reality of God's kingdom — righteousness, peace, and joy in the Spirit. God's kingdom - His reign in our lives when we willingly give ourselves over to Him - isn't that of a despotic dictator. No, the kingdom of God is a kingdom of joy. Joy, pure joy, is the defining mark of life under God's reign That's His Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Joy - deep, abiding joy - is simply the most wondrous thing. Not happiness. Happiness ebbs and flows depending on your circumstances. Joy, on the other hand, sticks with you through all your ups and downs. With all my heart, I know that God wants you to live in His deep, abiding joy … for every minute of every day for the rest of your life. And that joy isn't something you conjure up on your own; it's transferred into the deepest recesses of your being by Jesus Himself. If you've ever enjoyed cool air from an air conditioner on a sweltering hot day, you've benefited from the physics of heat exchange. Hot and cool fluids run through separate channels; heat passes through a thin wall so the hot side is cooled, and the cool side becomes refreshingly cold. That's how Jesus describes His joy transfer to His fearful followers on the night before His crucifixion: John 15:11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. (NRSV) He doesn't merely cheer us on from a distance — He transfers His own joy into us. His joy flows into our weary hearts, filling us with what He Himself carries, so that our joy too may be complete. Do you see the transfer, the exchange that He's describing? … my joy … in you … so that your joy … may be complete. But like a heat exchange, the joy exchange depends on proximity, on being close to Jesus, on abiding in Him, on listening to Him, on obeying Him. That's how the joy exchange happens - through closeness and intimacy. May Jesus' joy in you … be complete. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

The burdens of life can, at times, be rather heavy. And the longer you carry them, the heavier they become; sapping you of your strength; robbing you of your joy. Is that really how you want to live? Humans have been using camels as beasts of burden for nearly three thousand years. There's a reason for that. A camel can carry around 450 kilograms or a thousand pounds across the desert — not because it's simply "strong," but because God designed it with special tendon-and-joint engineering that locks its legs when it kneels. So the weight of the load doesn't press directly on its muscles; rather, it's transferred through its skeletal frame. So the camel doesn't strain under its burden the way we would — its structure does the work. Hold that thought as we dive into this powerful Scripture, where God speaks to His people Israel through the prophet: Nehemiah 8:10 Nehemiah said, "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." (NIV) They were struggling under multiple heavy loads, those people. Sound familiar? Now, picture that camel's strength. In the same way, "the joy of the Lord is your strength."  Your strength amidst hardship isn't about gritting your teeth and pushing harder. It's about God's joy "re-engineering" how the weight falls on you. Instead of the burden crushing your spirit, His joy in you carries it, locking you into His strength, not your own. God's joy doesn't just lift your heart—it carries your load, for the joy of the LORD is your strength. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Life's journey has more twists and turns than a rollercoaster at midnight. Take a wrong turn … and you'll go hurtling off the rails. On average, we make around 500 conscious decisions a day. So in an average human lifetime, we'll make over 13 million conscious decisions. Let's assume that 95% of those are inconsequential, and although they can have a cumulative effect (I'm sure you'll agree that 10,000 decisions to eat junk food will have an impact) let's set them aside for a moment and go with the 5% – the 650,000 moderate to important decisions you'll make in your life. Now let's optimistically assume that you get 95% of them right and just 5% wrong – that's still 32,500 moderate to important mistakes, more than enough to ruin a life, which goes a long way to explaining why so many people experience so little joy. King David had more life-and-death twists and turns than we'll ever experience. Yet this is what he said to God: Psalm 16:11 You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (NRSV) Imagine that you draw so close to God, on such intimate speaking terms with Him that He shows you the path to take in each decision, at every twist and turn. What would that mean for you? David knew the answer: fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore. God's joy begins in His Presence—it's complete, it's eternal, and it doesn't depend on your circumstances. Go on, draw close to Him and let Him fill you with His joy! That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

You know what they say: an overnight success generally takes around twenty years. I know, I know. We wish it weren't true, and yet we know that it is! In 1994, a complete nobody by the name of Jeff Bezos began with a small online bookstore in his garage, armed with a dream far bigger than he had any right to dream. While others looked for quick profits, he kept his eyes fixed on the horizon. He reinvested profits when critics demanded dividends; he experimented when others played it safe. Slowly, that garage-born dream stretched its reach across the globe. Amazon has become not just a retailer, but a marketplace, a Cloud pioneer, and a household name—all because one man valued endurance over easy victories. Refusing to let impatience steer his course, Bezos said, "Short-term wins are easy, short-term thinking is dangerous." Proverbs 13:4 Lazy people always want things but never get them. Those who work hard get plenty. Without meaning to shoot down your dreams, let's assume that you're unlikely to found another Amazon … although, I guess, who knows, right? But God created you, uniquely, to do something; to achieve something that will make this world a better place. And whilst hard work doesn't always guarantee the level of success we had in mind, let me tell you, laziness almost certainly guarantees failure. By all means, dream big dreams, as big as you like. But remember, dreams without discipline stay just that, dreams; it's hard work and diligence that turn them into reality. Lazy people always want things but never get them. Since the very beginning, whispering secrets and untruths about others has been one of the greatest temptations of humanity. That snake in the Garden of Eden kicked it off by twisting the truth about God to lead Adam and Eve into the first act of human rebellion against their Creator.   Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII, was targeted by courtiers and political rivals who resented her influence. Jealous whispers and slander—accusations of adultery, incest, and witchcraft—spread quickly. Though no credible evidence existed, it was used to build a case against her. In May 1536, she was beheaded at the Tower of London, not only ending her life but also destabilising alliances, altering the line of succession, and setting England on a volatile political course. How many people's careers, reputations, and lives have been ruined throughout the ages by idle or malicious gossip? Without doubt, millions. How true! People may well gather around as you pass on a juicy piece of gossip. They may delight in learning a sordid secret. But know this: they'll never trust you again, because you've rightly earned the label of 'gossip'. Gossip may start as a whisper, but it carries the power to destroy lives and destinies. You hear people talk about their calling, and it sounds oh-so noble. But a calling, inevitably, has a cost. It involves laying down your own desires in the service of others. And that is noble indeed. Some like to flaunt their works for all to see. Sir Nicholas Winton was not one of those. In 1938, he cancelled a ski holiday to help a friend working with refugees in Czechoslovakia. Seeing the Nazi threat, he organised the rescue of 669 Jewish children by arranging trains, securing visas, and finding foster homes in Britain. He kept quiet about it for 50 years, never seeking recognition. Living entirely for himself would have been much safer and easier, but Winton chose the harder road of service, valuing others above himself. Philippians 2:3-4 In whatever you do, don't let selfishness or pride be your guide. Be humble, and honour others more than yourselves. Don't be interested only in your own life, but care about the lives of others too. I think you'd agree that the sort of life Paul's talking about in that passage is the very definition of a noble calling. We don't have to achieve some great thing to attain that nobility. It's the little things we do along the way that impact people's lives. In a world where self-interest is the norm, it's never been more true that living for yourself alone is the lowest form of life. The richest life isn't measured by what you keep, but by how much of yourself you give away. Don't be interested only in your own life, but care about the lives of others too. That's God's Word. As crazy ideas go, Jesus' idea of feeding a crowd of five thousand with two small fish and five loaves of bread is right up there … wouldn't you agree? I mean … what was He thinking? Gladys Aylward had little formal education, almost no money, and so, was rejected by countless missionary societies. But with barely enough for a one-way train ticket she set out alone to China, trusting God to use what she had. Over the years, God multiplied her small "offering" into extraordinary influence: she established an inn to share the gospel, became a trusted advisor to a Chinese mandarin, reformed cruel prison practices, and during the Japanese invasion led over 100 orphaned children on a perilous hundred-mile journey to safety. What had begun with a handful of resources, in God's hands became a lifeline for countless lives. Confronted by Jesus' crazy idea of feeding the five thousand … John 6:7-9 Philip answered, "We would all have to work a month to buy enough bread for each person here to have only a little piece!" Another follower there was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. Andrew said, "Here is a boy with five loaves of barley bread and two little fish. But that is not enough for so many people." But Jesus blessed those meagre morsels … feeding the whole crowd, with twelve baskets of leftovers to spare. From that miracle onward, in the lives of countless of His followers – ordinary people like Gladys – God has made it clear: It's not your job to feed the five thousand. Your job is to bring the five loaves and two fish. When you give God what's in your hands, He can turn a ticket and a trembling heart into a miracle that echoes for generations. That's God's Word. We each tend to have a somewhat malleable relationship with the notion of justice. When we're on the receiving end of an injustice, man, we want justice done! But what about when others suffer an injustice? Then how much do we really care? Many global industries, from fast fashion to electronics, are linked to forced labour, child exploitation, and trafficking. If we truly care about justice for others, then it's not only about avoiding their products but actively advocating for change—writing to companies, supporting ethical brands, raising awareness. The challenge is immense, overwhelming, inconvenient, costly. Choosing justice for those people means paying more, changing habits, risking backlash from those who prefer comfort over confrontation. As you ponder that, drink this in: Isaiah 1:17 Learn to do good. Treat people fairly. Punish those who hurt others. Speak up for the widows and orphans. Argue their cases for them in court. German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who courageously opposed Hitler, paying with his life, once said: "Your 'yes' to God requires your 'no' to all injustice, to all evil, to all lies, to all oppression and violation of the weak and poor." Thinking about that from your position of relative safety and privilege, what do you, really? Because that sort of justice costs more than money—it costs comfort. But seriously, isn't this the price of walking in step with God's heart? Perhaps it's time for us to value justice for others as highly as we do for ourselves. Speak up for the widows and orphans. Life's full of problems and yet, given the world we live in today, perhaps we've become all too accustomed to finding instant solutions. So, when you're faced with a problem that you just can't seem to get through, what do you do? During the early 20th century, much of physics was dominated by Newtonian assumptions. Many accepted them as unquestionable "facts," but Albert Einstein trained his mind to think beyond the surface, asking deeper questions about space, time, and light. His famous Theory of Relativity unveiled realities that had always been there, that had always been true, but had remained hidden. Einstein's genius was not in memorising what others knew but in seeking what lay beneath, exposing truth as it really is. That's great in physics, but this idea of going deeper … well, it's even more important when we come to the real issues we face in life. Proverbs 18:15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out. (NIV) Discerning people aren't content with what everyone else knows or takes for granted. They go below the surface, digging deeper to get to the real issues. Think about that sticky relationship you're involved in right now, or whatever conundrum currently confronts you, a problem that you haven't quite been able to work your way through yet. In this insta-world in which we live, we're always looking for quick fixes, easy answers. But sometimes you need to go deeper to get to the heart of the matter. Knowledge is there for those willing to search—it's God's glory to conceal a matter, and our glory to search it out. Pray into it. Dig into it. God will reveal it. That's God's Word. Opportunities for taking shortcuts abound in this life. We can choose, multiple times every day, either to take the easy route out of expediency, or the longer one to do what's right; to cave in to evil, or to struggle through for good. I wonder, when was the last time you cut corners; when you caved to something less than good? In the first century BC, amidst the chaos of the late Roman Republic, political alliances shifted like sand. Many senators backed whoever promised them wealth or survival, but Marcus Tullius Cicero sought instead to judge matters through the lens of justice and the common good. During the Catiline Conspiracy, when Lucius Sergius Catilina plotted to overthrow the government, some urged a swift execution of all suspected conspirators—no trial, no evidence weighed. But Cicero resisted the mob's rush to judgment, pressing for clear proof before condemning anyone. His measured approach exposed the true leaders of the plot while sparing the innocent, demonstrating that wisdom discerns not just between right and wrong, but between what merely seems expedient and what is truly just. Hebrews 5:13-14 Anyone who lives on milk is still a baby and is not able to understand much about living right. But solid food is for people who have grown up. From their experience they have learned to see the difference between good and evil. True wisdom, godly wisdom, refuses the shortcut of expedience, choosing instead the harder road of goodness, justice and kindness based on God's truth. Our capacity for denial of the obvious is amazing. We can be presented with irrefutable evidence that something exists and yet, based on our experience, our particular worldview, our version of the truth, still deny that which is as plain as day. I recently met a man who, with every fibre of his being, believes that the world is flat. I mean, he was absolutely genuine. Wow! But did you know that there are also people who … wait for this … don't believe in the existence of God? I know, now you think I'm the crazy one. Because, in point of fact, the vast majority of the human race doesn't believe in God. No, the universe wasn't 'created', it just happened, and life simply … evolved. Former American President Ronald Reagan once said, "I have long been unable to understand the atheist in this world of so much beauty. And I've had an unholy desire to invite some atheists to dinner and serve the most fabulous gourmet meal that's ever been concocted and, after dinner, ask them if they believe there's a cook." The Apostle Paul put it like this: Romans 1:20 There are things about God that people cannot see—his eternal power and all that makes him God. But since the beginning of the world, those things have been easy for people to understand. They are made clear in what God has made. So people have no excuse for the evil they do. Look around. From the bee sitting on the flower in your garden to the peak of Mount Everest, it's obvious. So we have no excuse for the evil we do. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

The word "pleasure" can have both positive and negative connotations depending on the sort of pleasure we're talking about. But have you ever wondered whether God takes pleasure in anything, and if so, in what? There's a verse that, each time I read it, completely blows my mind. Here it is: Psalm 149:4 For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation. (ESV) How do you unpack that? How do you make sense of the fact that the God who created the whole universe takes pleasure in His people – fallible human beings like you and me who've made so many mistakes in our lives; who've dishonoured Him, turned our backs on Him … so many times in our lives. Imagine a guy gets fired—it's his own fault, too many no-shows. Weeks later, his old boss calls. "We're short-staffed. Want your job back?" No lecture, no probation—just a fresh start. He hangs up, stunned, grinning like a kid. That, to me, is this verse in real life: God delighting in the humble, lifting them when they least deserve it. And let me tell you, that expression, "takes pleasure in", is a really strong one in the Hebrew language in which that was originally written. It speaks of deep pleasure, acceptance and favour, not reluctant tolerance. God's love for you and me is active and joyful. And it's not in our human strength, or status or self-reliance, but in those who walk humbly with Him. So when you're perhaps feeling a bit down on yourself, know this: that heaven's applause is already yours, and He adorns you with His salvation. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

To a lesser or greater degree, those who profess a faith in Jesus Christ will invariably suffer. For some, that may merely involve scorn or ridicule. But for countless others down through the centuries, it's cost them their lives. In the 16th Century, Anne Askew, a young English poet and Protestant reformer, was arrested and tortured for rejecting Catholicism. Offered freedom if she recanted she refused, answering her interrogators with clarity and even wit. Despite the brutal treatment, she spoke of her joy in Christ and her certainty of a heavenly reward. As she was burned at the stake, eyewitnesses recorded her praying aloud and quoting Scripture until her voice was silenced by the flames. She lived—and died—with the unshakable assurance that God's promise outweighed any earthly suffering. Said Jesus to His followers: Luke 6:22-23 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. (NRSV) Over the last few days, we've chatted about fearless faith and bold belief. Too many of Christ's followers today have become all too shy about their faith, hiding their light under a bushel for fear of recrimination. Why, when Jesus, in the face of persecution, called us blessed? When the world turns up the heat, remember—no fire on earth can burn away the reward that awaits you, so rejoice in that day, leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven. At the core of your being, let me ask you, what do you believe? Do you believe in the power of the Good News of Jesus to save you from your sin? Or is that a difficult, even impossible thing for you to believe? What … do you … believe? If all that feels a tad "in your face", I get it. And yet, I make no apology for it. Because sometimes I feel the need to be direct in cutting through the clutter, in slicing through the opaque veil of worldly self-interest that casts itself so readily over the human heart. Sometimes we need to be jolted out of our complacency, shocked into action. Life puddles along. The concerns of life fill our minds. And we forget, all too easily, that there's a powerful truth set before each one of us by God Himself - that He sent Jesus to save us from our sin; that by faith in Him and Him alone, we can be saved; that if we reject the good news, the gospel of Jesus Christ, we will spend eternity separated from God in that place we call hell. For that reason, like the Apostle Paul back in the 1st Century AD … Romans 1:16-17 … I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, "The one who is righteous will live by faith." (NRSV) Your faith in Christ alone is what can save you, what will save you. With all my heart, I urge you today to believe. Believe in Jesus. That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.

We live in a world intent on rejecting Christ; rejecting the notion that there is a God of love and justice in heaven; rejecting this fanciful idea that He'd do anything so dramatic as to send His Son into this world, to die for us on a cross so that our sins might be forgiven, and to rise again to give us the gift of eternal life. Oh, in part, Jesus may still be tolerated, but not obeyed. For many, cultural Christianity has emerged as a safe alternative to biblical discipleship. Truth has been redefined, even by the church. Faith has been sidelined for comfort. The gospel has been rebranded while, all the while, persecution intensifies. And so, in response, some (many?) have perfected the art of nodding politely to Jesus while nailing the door shut in His face; wanting His comfort, not His cross; His blessings, not His Lordship. We've traded the narrow road for the wide one, repackaging Him into a benign mascot for our worldly ambitions. With all that going on … many have become ashamed of the real Jesus, of the power He offers us for our lives to be transformed, of the truth that our eternity lies in His hands. They've become timid in telling others of Him, in light of their own, watered-down faith. And yet, amidst not dissimilar circumstances back in the 1st Century AD, the Apostle Paul writes this: Romans 1:16  I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (NRSV) Friend, that's God's clarion call to you and to me to live out a fearless faith amidst a world intent on dismissing Jesus as irrelevant or foolish. Don't be ashamed of Jesus. We each, inevitably, arrive at a point where all hope appears lost; where we can't see how we'll survive; where any faith we may have had in God seems so fragile in light of the terrible circumstances that confront us. Perhaps you've been there, perhaps it's yet to come. Vilhjalmur Stefansson was an Arctic explorer of Icelandic descent. In 1913, his ship was trapped and destroyed by pack ice, leaving him and his men stranded in one of the most inhospitable places on earth. Facing starvation, polar storms, and total isolation, Stefansson leaned on his deep faith and unshakable belief in God's providence. He adapted by learning from the Inuit, surviving entirely on local resources, and leading his team to safety after years in the Arctic. He later testified that it was the certainty of God's presence and strength that sustained him when all human hope was gone. Said God to His people Israel, close to the end of seventy years in exile as slaves in Babylon, when all hope appeared lost, when they couldn't see how they'd ever be saved, when their faith in Him seemed so fragile against the might of the Babylonian Empire … Isaiah 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand. (HCSB). When every human resource fails, God's presence doesn't just comfort you—He gives you the strength, the wisdom, the resilience to walk out of the terror back into life once more. That's His Word.
