Sepsis Revisited - Survivers

So what is sepsis?  When a bacterial infection occurs, the body releases chemicals into the bloodstream. This is called an inflammatory response. When an infection progresses from sepsis to severe sepsis, the inflammation creates microscopic clots that block oxygen and nutrients which can result in organ failure. If left unchecked, severe sepsis can progress to septic shock resulting in a dramatic drop in blood pressure. The drop in blood pressure causes additional inadequate perfusion to the major organs that can result in death.  Early detection is key to survival, and hospitals are now using many tools to drive down the mortality rate associated with sepsis.   In this show we will discuss what it's like to have survived sepsis, how it was discovered and are there lingering effects?
