The term comes from the Latin pietas, which originally expressed a complex virtue of respect and duty toward gods, country, parents, and kin. In a religious context, it specifically means a filial respect and devotion to God. Piety means Godly Reverence. This is the most common meaning, referring to a deep reverence or devotion to God and the devout fulfillment of religious duties. Devoutness means deep religious feeling or commitment.
