Session 7: Unlearning Future with Kate Rich

from Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons · host Casco - Office for Art, Design & Theory

Session 7: Unlearning Future
with Kate Rich Agenda setting, collective pot experiment This final session of the Assembly addressed the “now” as holding the future. It looked into the very room of the Assembly by asking what sort of commons resources we have as participants and how we can distribute them. That is, we proposed an experiment in forming a collective pot! This session entailed collective agenda setting among the Assembly participants as well as follow-up actions. Artist Kate Rich, initiator of Feral Trade, a grocery business and public experiment in trading goods through social networks, provided us with inspiration for this experiment. Kate Rich is a trade artist and feral economist. Since 2003 she has run Feral Trade, a grocery business and underground freight network forging new ‘wild’ trade routes across business, art and social interaction. She is senior lecturer in DIY media at the University of the West of England, system administrator for the Irational.org art server collective, volunteer finance manager at Bristol’s Cube Microplex, co-producer of open source soft drink Cube-Cola, and a founding member of the Sail Cargo Alliance. Her ongoing preoccupation is to move deeper into infrastructure of trade, administration, organisation and economy in the cultural realm, to which end she is currently doing the groundwork to design and run the Feral MBA.
