今月4回にわたって紹介している山梨県立八ヶ岳牧場。本場と天女山分場、そして、まきば公園がある広大な牧場です。本場では、山梨県所有の黒毛和牛が飼われていて、一般の方の入場はできません。取材・収録のため特別に許可を得て入らせて頂きました。今回は、まずその本場で、牛たちの食べものとなる高品質な採草用の牧草と堆肥利用について山梨県子牛育成協会、専務理事で事務局長の菊島孝さんと草地環境担当リーダーの寺田直哉さんにお話を伺い、作業の様子を見せて頂きました。さらに、5月上旬から10月下旬までの間、肉用牛の他、酪農家の方々から、おとなになる前の若い乳牛(育成牛)を預り育てている天女山分場の一部を開放してつくられた、まきば公園を、総務担当リーダー兼、まきば公園担当リーダーの石原真由美さんに案内して頂きました。雄大な自然と広大な緑の牧草地で動物とのふれあいができる、まきば公園では、作業されていたスタッフの方々にもマイクを向けてみました。
