Should Star Wars stories be accessible?
from Eye on Canon Podcast · host Matthew Neugebauer and Joel Davis
EP. 145 The Disney era of Star Wars has seen an explosion of on-screen content, including a new trilogy, a whole bevy of live-action shows, and animated shows for a wide range of viewers. Add to this a proliferation of a whole new universe of paper canon stories for multiple ages, culminating (so far) in the long-running and highly cumulative High Republic initiative. All these stories aim to both bring in new fans and warm the hearts of long-time lore-seekers, but that balance continues to be a notoriously difficult tightrope to walk. Moreover, shows, books and comics are targeted for younger audiences, some – like the grippingly complex Andor – are clearly meant for more-educated adults, and others seek to hit the bullseye of appealing to everyone. This week we address both the empirical and normative: how widely accessible have Star Wars stories been thus far, and how accessible should they be?
