EP. 219The topic of galactic government – centred on Coruscant, Chandrila or elsewhere – inherently includes questions about how all these planets and sectors and institutions cooperate with each other. Hint: sometimes they don't, which gives us the “Wars” in “Star Wars.” But when they do, it's found in the intersection between longstanding norms and institutional procedures that reinforce those norms. In the real world, that’s typically how we understand federalism, colonialism, confederalism and any other way to bring diverse interests and polities into one. Is Star Wars closer to the ideal of E Pluribus Unum of “We the People,” or the dryer but perhaps more realist attempt at “Peace, Order and Good Government” found in Canada’s Constitution? Or something else entirely? EP. 209It’s true that we can point to specific themes, plot points, characters, ships designs and more for a sense of what Star Wars “is.” Perhaps more importantly though, we all have a gut feeling – or different gut feelings – about the identity of the franchise and its stories. Action! Excitement! Heroism! Dread! That warm, fluffy sense of being home. This “emotional identity” is especially important for those who first encountered it as children, before we reached intellectual maturity. It’s also why nostalgia is one of the most powerful markers of that identity. This sense of whether or not something “feels” like Star Wars comes to a head most when a new film or show comes out, since that newness can challenge our feelings and perceptions, or perhaps affirm them. EP.   201It’s no accident that the design of the Jedi Council Archives is based on the famed library of Trinity College, Dublin. Since the galaxy of Star Wars particularly reflects our own western world, its communication is heavily reliant on documents, files and even books. Like us, the cultural heritage bestowed on (and forgotten by?) The Late Republic, Empire, New Republic and First Order is contained in these texts, whether that heritage comes in the form of lore and stories of meaning-making, or historical records and technical information. Even the habit of producing texts, written correspondence, news broadcasts and other messages is the work of cultural inheritance. EP.   200The Disney takeover in 2014 brought a brand new era of novels, comics and short stories, as well as films, live action and animated shows (including a new animated show literally this morning!) This fresh start promised an incredibly bold ideal: a fully-integrated and continuous canon across all media. More profoundly, it traces its own mythic origins to Campbell and behind him, the Hades of Greco-Roman imagination. It's therefore the essential first step in the hero’s journey out past the confines of everyday life with its familiar comforts of routines, practices and people. EP.   196If there's a bright centre of the galaxy, then countless star systems will try to slip through its fingers. For almost all of the Star Wars that we currently have, the main political entity is a single galaxy-spanning body centred on Coruscant. Of course, it's more accurate to say that the Republic, the New Republic and above all the Empire merely aspire to extend their reach across the galaxy, with mixed results. Both iterations of the Republic simply can’t establish enough of a unifying presence in the outer rim, or haven’t even shown up yet. The tyrannical Empire faces a number of worlds, including in the core (RIP Alderaan), that harbour an open guerrilla revolution aimed at regime change across the galaxy. But at some points in the story of Star Wars, a whole swath of worlds band together for the cause of independence from Coruscant. They want to separate and form a whole ‘nother  entity alongside the Republic. EP.   195Perhaps the most important part of a story is the ending, which may be why it's the hardest to pull off. Likely the second-most important part of storytelling is the beginning. Readers often forget it as the plot thickens and characters develop, but it's critical to set up everything that follows. And in our era of Tik Tok attention spans and online hot takes, it has to grab the audience and then leave them wanting more. EP.   194Star Wars has a lot to say about leadership. The Saga films often involve leaders as supporting characters who spur on our young heroes to come into their own and take leadership roles themselves. General Organa’s biting words to Poe, “dead heroes…no leaders,” pushed him to guide the Resistance out of Crait, and then take on the mantle of fighting the Final Order. At other times, these older figures can be obstacles for the main characters to overcome, either by their presence (hello, Palpatine?) or their absence (good night, Qui-Gon). When those heroes get taken up as legacy characters in the wider canon, we often see them in a leadership role, most notably Luke, Leia and Han, and ultimately Rey and Finn. And as if the character reaches beyond the story into the realm of storytelling, Mon Mothma shepherds the transition from Prequel Trilogy to the Originals as she leads the emerging Rebel Alliance. Of course, Star Wars – and Pop Art in general – is most successful when its themes are strongly and convincingly expressed through plot and character. However, even George wasn't always consistent, especially in the many interviews and commentaries he gave over the years to illuminate his films. That inconsistency has only gotten more complicated now that multiple directors, showrunners, screenwriters and other creatives are involved in “passing on” their characters and stories to the next creative –such as the “hand-off” in the Sequel Trilogy from JJ Abrams to Rian Johnson and then back to JJ. It might also be poetic that one of us (who can tell?) only just finished reading it a year into the current presidential administration. It’s also important to remember that the implied author Beaumont Kin is as fictional as the Galactic Empire he is chronicling. The best filmmakers, production designers, comic book artists, video game illustrators and overall storytellers have continued this strong sense of the “look” of the Galaxy Far, Far Away. EP.   173One of the nicest things about an extended canon – be it in streaming shows or in books and comics – is that it gives creatives more time to flesh out and expand the characters and character beats of the films. This expansion is particularly notable for characters who only have bit parts on the big screen, but then find a new lease in life in other media. For some of these examples, it's the fan reaction to a character or even a character design that prompts both creatives and executives to give these characters more time in the sun, reminding us that the stories that Lucasfilm tells and the support (financial and otherwise) that fans give to those stories are in a symbiotic, chicken-and-egg relationship.
