In this conversation I sat down with Robin and Avis to dig into why that word — obey, submit — makes even faithful women flinch, and why almost every objection ends up in the same place: "I'll submit if he's worthy." Which sounds reasonable until you realize it's the loophole that swallows the whole thing. Because the second she gets to decide what counts as worthy, her version of the truth always wins. There's no structure left. There's just two people who never actually agreed on who makes the call. We get into the part nobody wants to admit: someone has to be the tiebreaker. You can talk it out forever, but "we'll just keep discussing it" is a fantasy that holds right up until the day you genuinely can't agree — and then what? In my own marriage, I give my opinion, my husband hears it, and he makes the decision. Not so we land on a consensus. So he understands where I'm standing before he carries the weight. And here's the part I want every husband watching to hear clearly: this is not "I'm the leader, now bow down." A man who doesn't use his wife as a sounding board is being an idiot. Get the input. Gather everything you can. Make the smartest call for your family. But the responsibility lands on you — and that's exactly what makes it a gift to her, not a punishment. Because the wife who thinks it's her job to police her husband, to catch every wrong call and twist the knife when he gets it wrong, will never relax in her own marriage. She can't. She's appointed herself the corrections officer. Take that role away and something softens. She finally gets to stop carrying a load that was never hers.
