Unconditional love is a popular topic these days. And it sounds great. Especially on the receiving end.Be loved no matter what I do? Sign me up!But, as Christians, it can also seem like a commandment. To love others no matter what they do to us.And it’s true. Jesus does ask us to be kind to those who are not kind to us. To bless them that curse us.And it’s important to do that in marriage. To not return evil for evil. If your wife has an affair, to not have one back. If your wife yells at you, to not yell back.But, we also can misunderstand this teaching. We can think that it also means we should be losing every day in our marriage so our wife can win. That we should just listen when she’s yelling at us. That we should just let her spend whatever she wants. That we should just deal with a marriage with no sex for years.Fortunately, this is NOT what Jesus taught. He taught us to love our neighbors AS ourselves. Equally to ourselves.We want to find things that work for BOTH of us with money, sex, in-laws, parenting, religion, housework and time.We want to respect our wives, AND respect ourselves.This is what creates a marriage that works long term.
