Sleeping Gods & Kings of Chaos
from As The Chaos Dies · host As The Chaos Dies
The psalms appear to give contradictory images of God in relation to sleep. Psalm 121 says that Yahweh never sleeps, that he is eternally vigilant in protecting his people from all evil. Psalm 44:24 gives exactly the opposite picture, however. The psalmist calls upon God to wake up and save his people from the wicked who threaten to devour them. How do we make sense of this? Scholars have varying approaches to deal with this seeming contradiction. The answer lies in the Ancient Near Eastern sleeping deity motif. In this video I will explain what that is, why it matters, and how it emphatically points to the deity of Jesus Christ.
