SMARTER Goals
from The Health and Sport Show
Tom delivers some good news/bad news! The goals and aspirations we have fail most of the time. All is not lost, however, so don’t throw your fitness plan in the bin yet as Tom is going to fill you in on some of the most common reasons why this actually happens. We can improve our chances if we concentrate on how we structure and set our goals from the outset. KEY TAKEAWAYS Failure to plan is planning to fail, so you need S.M.A.R.T.E.R goals an acronym designed to guide you through this stage. Specific. Narrow your target. “I want to get fitter” is too fuzzy a concept to have a goal. It should be a measurable destination. Measurable. Make sure your journey is in units you can keep track of and see your progress. Actionable. A good plan is worth nothing without execution. Rousing. You must be enthusiastic about your progress and success. Time bound. They should include a deadline, a frequency or a start date. Exposing. Our goals should take us out of our comfort zone and highlight our areas that need improving on. Relevant. The target must be suitable for you and your life. BEST MOMENTS ‘When you are trying to bust out of a life long habit there’s an actual research based process to follow if you want to give yourself the best chance to succeed.’ ‘You need to be able to track your progress as you go. This way you can see the gap closing between where you are now and where you want to be in the future.’ ‘How much more? It’s not very helpful or inspiring to say “I want to run faster this year”’ ‘When we are deciding on our goals it’s important to be clear on what the next step is.’ ‘The problem is most of us set goals that we think we really should do like “I really need to stop smoking.”’ ‘A goal without a deadline is missing a sense of urgency or direction.’ ‘We tend to rise to a challenge, but then we coast when we are comfortable.’ ‘Nothing ever goes completely to plan. What are those obstacles? By identifying these early this can really reduce frustration further down the road.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Tims training schedule :https://app.searchie.io/watch/yXq7Ao9eDmhttps://youtube.com/channel/UCQXAka99a6MdZexeEJaMZbAhttps://m.facebook.com/elevatehealthuk/https://www.elevatehealthuk.com/https://instagram.com/elevate_healthuk?utm_medium=copy_link ABOUT THE HOST TOM BUTTERFIELD I have always been interested in sports, unfortunately injuries and poor training decisions curtailed my dream of becoming a professional football player. I have always been very passionate about helping people and I get a real kick out of seeing people improve and make progress towards a chosen goal or aspiration. I have been actively learning and implementing knowledge for over 20 years with the aim of improving the level of service I can offer to my clients. This has included formal qualifications such as: BSc (Hons) in Sports Sciences Masters in chiropractic PGDip in Diagnostic Medical (Musculoskeletal) Ultrasonography 14 years clinical experience helping tens of thousands of members of the public to improve their health and wellbeing. Unofficially I have digested countless information in the form of audiobooks, books, video, seminars, and countless conversations with experts within the health and wellbeing niche. I aim for at least one hour a day. The day I stop learning is the day I pack up my stuff and go home.
