Solomon Anointed King & Peter Preaches to Cornelius’ Household | Day 167

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

What happens when God radically shifts the course of history? Today on Day 167, we watch old eras give way to monumental new beginnings. In 1 Kings, the golden reign of King David draws to a dramatic close. As David lies frail in his bed, a rogue son attempts to steal the crown, forcing a swift response to publicly anoint Solomon as the rightful heir. With his final breaths, David charges his son to walk faithfully in the statutes of God before passing away into history. In the book of Acts, an even greater shift unfolds. Peter steps across a forbidden threshold into the home of a Roman Centurion. As he preaches the gospel, the Holy Spirit falls raw and unedited upon these Gentile outsiders, completely shocking the Jewish believers and proving that God has granted repentance leading to life to all nations.Today’s Scripture:📖 1 Kings 1:1–2:12 – An aging King David is frail and unable to stay warm. Seizing the power vacuum, his oldest surviving son, Adonijah, throws a feast to declare himself king, backed by Joab. Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba alert David, who acts decisively, ordering Solomon to be placed on his own mule and anointed king at Gihon Spring. The rebellion instantly dissolves as Adonijah flees for safety. In chapter 2, David gives Solomon a final charge to keep the Law of Moses, and David dies after ruling Israel for forty years.📖 Acts 10:23–11:18 – Peter arrives at the house of Cornelius in Caesarea, acknowledging it was traditionally forbidden for a Jew to associate with a Gentile. As Peter preaches that Jesus is Lord of all, the Holy Spirit falls upon all who heard the word, evidenced by tongues and praise. Peter commands them to be baptized. Returning to Jerusalem, Peter is criticized by circumcision traditionalists, but he recounts his vision and the Spirit's falling, prompting the council to glorify God: "Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life."📖 Psalm 74:10–17 – Asaph continues his heavy plea, asking God how long the foe will scoff and mock His name. He shifts to declare God's ancient, cosmic power, praising Him as the King who divided the sea, broke the heads of the sea monsters, established the celestial lights, and made both summer and winter.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG 📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF 📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/ 🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT 📧 Questions?
