Solomon Dedicates the Temple & Paul Heals a Lame Man in Lystra | Day 172

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

What happens when the true King encounters human worship and human hostility? Today on Day 172, we witness an epic royal prayer of dedication alongside the wild, unpredictable realities of the frontline mission field. In 1 Kings, Solomon stands before the newly filled Temple, spreading his hands toward heaven in one of the most comprehensive prayers in Scripture. He acknowledges that even the highest heavens cannot contain God, yet begs Him to hear His people whenever they pray toward this place. In the book of Acts, Paul and Barnabas experience the extreme volatility of human crowds in Lystra. After Paul miraculously heals a man lame from birth, the pagan crowd treats them like Greek gods. When the apostles furiously refuse the worship, the crowd flips instantly—stoning Paul and dragging him outside the city to die. Yet, in a stunning display of resurrection power, Paul stands right back up and walks back into the city to keep preaching.Today’s Scripture:📖 1 Kings 8:22–9:9 – Solomon kneels before the altar, praying for God to keep His covenant with David. He asks that when Israel sins—whether through defeat, famine, or exile—and repents toward this Temple, God would hear from heaven and forgive. Following a massive feast of 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep, God appears to Solomon a second time, promising to establish his throne forever if he walks in integrity, but warning that if Israel turns to idols, the Temple will become a heap of ruins.📖 Acts 14:8–28 – In Lystra, Paul commands a crippled man to stand, and he leaps up. The crowd shouts that the gods have come down, calling Barnabas Zeus and Paul Hermes. The apostles tear their clothes to stop the pagan sacrifices, crying out that they are only human. Soon, hostile leaders arrive from Antioch and Iconium, stirring up the crowd to stone Paul. Left for dead, Paul revives when the disciples gather around him. He finishes his journey through Derbe, appoints elders in every church, and returns to Antioch to report how God opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.📖 Proverbs 15:11–20 – Wisdom on the heart and character: "A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken." Solomon notes that Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord, and warns that a scoffer dislikes being reproved.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT📧 Questions?
