Una cuestión que sigue sin ser respondida es si el ser humano es bueno o malo por naturaleza o si, al contrario, es la sociedad la que nos hace buenos o malos. Dos desgracias sucedidas en el siglo XIX permitieron analizar lo que sucedía cuando unos náufragos quedaban aislados en una isla desierta. En el primero los que se salvaron del naufragio establecieron unas normas de colaboración y lograron sobrevivir, en cambio, de los 19 supervivientes del segundo naufragio solo sobrevivieron tres. Una conclusión de estos "experimentos naturales" es que la colaboración entre los miembros de nuestra especie debió resultar fundamental para la supervivencia en los duros tiempos prehistóricos. Ahora otros dos experimentos realizados con niños de corta edad, en los que se mostraban marionetas que colaboraban o no entre sí, o se les vestían con camisetas de distintos colores han revelado que la capacidad de formar grupos y de colaborar viene unida a una desgraciada característica humana: convertir en enemigos a otros que son identificados como ajenos a nuestro grupo.
