But you know, easier to dothese things on the Zooms. And it mayor may not be Friday whenever you'relistening to this. So happy Aloha, whatever day it is for you when you'relistening to this in the future.So. You can read about Julia in herbio, and there's some funny stuff inthere, so you should read it. But umI like to just jump into the deep end.You know me, Julia and I actually haveworked together. We worked togetheractually after we had the fires here onMaui, and she helped me to heal andnavigate through all of that, as she didwith many other of our community members. So beautiful work. Thank you for doingthat. And so you can get to know moreabout her professionally. In thebio, but also through our conversationnow. But I like to introduce youto the podcast and to our listeners byhaving you tell us a little bit. Aboutpart of your story and your journey andmaybe take us to a moment in time whenyou yourself were dealing with some ofthese challenges, maybe anxiety ordepression or both or whatever thatreally lend you, led you to whereyou are now and alsoto do the work that you're doing to beable to share these tools.Umm Yeah, a little bit of abackground that is relevant is. that Iwas born in Texas. I like to saythat I'm fully recovered. Nodisrespect, Texas. When Iwas a teenager, my my dad moved out ofthe country for his job and my mom movedto Santa Cruz. So I moved to Santa Cruzand ended up going to a highschool that was founded around an Indianyogi named Baba Hari Das, who was one ofRam Das's teachers, whoBabajari Das took a vow of silence thathe kept for about 75years. He was the real deal, areal yogi, Bhagavad Gita scholar. But this was like a different planet forme. But that was the firststep in terms of understanding asort of more spiritual perspective andunderstanding the idea of subduing one'smind, training the mind. And also around that time, I starteddoing some therapy because my parents gotdivorced. And if Iwould say jumping ahead 10 or 15 yearsafter many years of therapy and a lot ofmeditation retreats and that sort ofthing, I was still struggling with someanxiety, some depression, somerelationship patterns. And I was extrafrustrated because I was like, I havebeen working on some of these patternsfor so many years, why are they stillcoming up?And thanksto my mom networkingme with my mentor, SueFeathers, one of my shamanic mentors, Ihad a session with her, and itwas a soul retrieval session, and it wasso visceral andpowerful that it IGoogled, what is shamanism? And I was inmy 30s at the time, and I lived inBerkeley, and nearby was a center calledthe Foundation of the Sacred Stream. thathad a very methodical coursefor studying all sorts of things. ButI focus on becoming a depth hypnosispractitioner and with a focuson shamanic counseling. And what Ifound was umm thatas the Dalai Lama said, maybe four yearsago, because I have a background inBuddhist psychology as well, that Westernpsychology is currently at kindergartenlevel in terms of understanding the mind, which is very humbling to hear. He saidit's very good at describing what's wrongwith people, butnot yet good enough at describing what'sright with people and how to heal.So when I started studying thethe the soul approach to therapy,I found that it filled in a lot of thegaps of Western psychology. There werethere's an emphasis on positivepsychology, on looking at what's rightwith us. There were techniques for how tofind these parts of ourselves that we'velost. It's very creative. We useour imagination. And so for any of us whohave a busy mind, it's it's really cool.Doesn't mean you have to have a superquiet mind. You can have a pretty activemind. And these techniques are reallyhelpful forrediscovering parts of ourselves. And theeffects are quite visceral as well. Soall of those, it's it wasn't just anintellectual experience, it was veryvisceral, which is really important.Well, I love that and and such aneclectic background and what aan interesting way that all of thesepieces have woven together in yourlife. And and and I can say frompersonal experience that it was it. Itdid feel like a really interestingapproach to healing intonavigating challenges and especially assomeone with a busy mind it was it wasrefreshing and. Iappreciate you sharing all of that sohonestly. And so something you said leadsme to my first question that, you know, many of us might be able to relate to andmyself I can for sure, is that, you know, trying different modalities, differentapproaches and many people in thiscommunity are like, you know, doing allthe things and they're drinking thespecial coffee and they're doing the thisand the breath work and the, you know, plunge, but.Not having the resolve or theclarity or the spaciousness or thehealing that they they want or they feellike they should be at quote, UN quote, whatever that means. Do you find foryourself, you pointed it out that youknow that it felt like something wasmissing, that you hadn't got to thatpoint and and so do you find that a lotof people come to you?And where doesthis soul retrieval fit into the factthat for many of us, we feel like, goodness, like, what is this? There's thissome missing piece that I can't put myfinger on, but I know that I haven'tfigured it out yet. I know that there'ssomething that's missing. And socan you speak to that from yourperspective of the soul retrieval toolset?Yes. And I Ifelt that frustration of like, whenI go into like self-work, I am likenerd alert, like go in deep journaling, like all of the tools, bodywork, somaticwork, et cetera. So it was veryfrustrating. And one of the things thatwas really helpful to me that SueFeathers said in the very first session, she was like, is this going to be aone-off thing or ongoing? And I was like, honestly, I don't even really know whatyou do. But there are some patterns thathaven't shifted and how she put it wasthat even if we've been working onsomething for years and years withdifferent modalities, if the soul partisn't back in us,then it might not have muchtraction. But when the soul part is back, then any work we do around that issue isgoing to have more traction. And theidea in shamanic healing is thatSometimesthe soul retrieval, and there are also,by the way, power retrievals andextractions and other other methods. But sometimes the soul retrieval startsa healing process. Sometimes it sustainsone and keeps it going. And sometimesit's the thing that ends a healingprocess, like it brings us to completionand just one soul retrieval canrebalance us on certain issues. SoI found that very, very helpful and itgave me a lot of hope. And there was aperiod I was like, I'm going to find allmy soul parts. I'm going to do a soulretrieval a day if I can.So it's if you're somebody who likes totake a lot of action and you've done alot of mapping of your trauma and thatsort of thing, it's really helpfulbecause then you can do strike missions.Oh, I like that. And so I think it's.No, I shouldn't say that. Can you explainto us what you mean by soul retrieval, just so that we all have some clarity onthe language in here?Because you know, those two words, separation might makesense to people, but together they'relike, hold, hold, please. Where's my soul? Why am I retrieving it?So this comes from the framework thatthat are we're fundamentally made ofenergy and the subtler parts of ourbeing can be known as our soul.Or energy body and during moments ofacute trauma, some when something happenssuddenly that's shocking. So it could beanything. It could be, you know, anythingthat causes PTSD, anysort of abuse. It can also be related tofeelings though. If we experiencesomething like where we're humiliated orembarrassed or or feel really intenselyrejected, part of our energy body orsoul body breaksoff. andit gets frozen outside of time and space. And that soul part, as it's known, carries with it the feelings that weretoo overwhelming for us to handle in themoment. But the soul part oftenalways actually carries gifts of ourstoo, that we become disconnected from. Soyou could say soul loss is another wordfor dissociation. And that's wherein psychology you might know, oh, Idissociate there, but it's like, butwhere did that piece go?So inshamanism, actually, a lot of illness isrelated of different kinds. Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual is reallyrelated to soul loss. So those partscan be tracked and brought back andreintegrated into our psyche. Soit's it's a fragment of our psyche, toput it into psychological language.OK. Thank you for clarifying that. Thathelps. And so in relation to and as yousaid there in shamanism and from thisperspective illness including mentalhealth challenges, you know probablyanxiety and depression could bepart of this caused by this like asymptom like how would you explain thatabsolutely symptoms typicallyif we've lost parts of ourselves, I meanone of the. important diagnosticquestions to figure out if you have soulloss, which I'm fascinated to discoverthat almost everyone who hears about soulloss, they know if they have it. And soone of the diagnostic questions is, haveyou ever had an experience where eversince then you haven't felt quite thesame, or ever since then you feel likeyou've lost part of yourself?Thiscan happen in relationships. One of mymentors says, we've built soul lossin your wedding vows. I give you myheart. She said it's better toshare your heart, not give it away, butwe give away pieces of ourselvesall over the place. Sothat's crucial to thinkabout. So symptoms can beanxiety, depression, feeling stuck, feeling like you have bad luck,no matter what you've done. And then thatleads into other things, because if wehave soul loss, where we're missingpieces of ourselves,It meanswe don't have as much of adefense mechanism for sort of preventingother energies from coming into us, whichmeans we can be more affected by thingsexternally. Whereas if we'refull of ourselves in a good way,we're more grounded, we're more connectedto our bodies. And that's also somethinginteresting is soul parts will eject orleave from different parts of our body.and from different chakras, if you'refamiliar with that system. So we canactually learn to use our bodies as sortof like a Doppler radar for likegeo locating where we might have soulloss. And if you think about it, theway some people describe their bodies, they're like, I don't havesensation down there or this or that. Itusually means like they're dissociated, they're disconnected. So when soul partscome back, that's why I'm saying this canbe really visceral. And that's one thingthat that really swayed myperspective when when I started doingthis work was that I started feeling thedifference in a way that I hadn't withjust traditional talk therapy.Wow, that's so fascinating. And I mean,my guess, as you said, is that prettymuch everybody can say they've had anexperience where they went through itand they felt different, right?Yeah,my mentor today, just being born on thisplanet is enough to experience soul loss.Really. Especially right now. My God,that's the wholegroups. If you think of African-Americansand Native Americans in this country haveexperienced group soul loss, I mean, itit gets pretty deep. The concept of soulloss is profound. I justgot goosebumps. Yeah, that's sointeresting. Yeah. And I mean, that wouldprobably have a role to play in ingenerational trauma andidentity. And yeah, that's a wholeother whole conversation, I wouldimagine. There's soulloss from past lifetimes. If you believein that, I mean, it's pretty deep. Yeah.YeahWhich we will talk about after thisbecause it's somewhat relevant. Yes. Oh,wow. That's so interesting. OK, so.Yeah, wow. And so if someonerecognizes, OK, yes, I've definitelyhad experiences where I feel like I wentthrough something that was reallyintense, little T, big T trauma, and they recognize that there islikely some soul loss that they wouldlike to resolveand retrieve. I know that's a big part ofwhat you do in your counseling services, and we will share a way for you toconnect further with Julia at the end.But. Let's just talk about likefor reintegration, forhealing, for navigatingthe craziness of life. Once we figurethis out, what would you say is essentialfor us to know and to dofrom this point forward? It's a good question. And one of the mostimportant things from the perspective ofshamanic healing is to go through lifepower filled andIf we're power filled, I mean, ultimately, like from the Buddhistperspective, if we become totally powerfilled, we start emitting energy andpower that even scares away interferencesto put it in that language. And from thatperspective, we can totally heal fromtrauma. We might have scartissue, but we can totally heal. Sojust as they've discovered in EMDRtherapy and other trauma-informed therapymodalities that if wego backto try to heal a traumatic or painfulmemory and we're not resourced, as theyput it. We can get re-traumatized. Wecan get pulled back into the emotions. Wemight start ruminating again. We mighthave like flashbacks or dreams. In shamanic language, we need to bepower-filled. Before we do a soulretrieval, we connect witha, we call them in the training I'vedone, guides of higherconsciousness. So in traditionalshamanism, whichpeople would say is pretty woo-woo, butmy motto is putting the woo into woo-woo,we need to be power filled. So we willmeet with traditionally the first powerretrieval as we connect with the poweranimal. And after thatthe guides of higher consciousness cancome in any form. And what I'vediscovered is whether you believe thatthese power animals or guides are.something external, like you believe inhelping spirits or the spirit world, oryou just feel like it's part of your mindthat you're accessing, like parts work. It's still effective, even if you don'tgo the woo-woo route. I do think thereare some extra benefits if you're open tothat, but so going through lifepower filled is important.AndIf you gothrough life power filled, and also bythe way, anytime you do a soul retrieval, automatically a power retrieval happensas well. Thesymptoms start to to shift. Webecome more present, more sensations in our body. We don't getrocked by as much stuff. Of course, suffering will still happen on thisplanet, but we become more resilient. So power filling is very, very importantand. Even just going outside and being innature for five minutes is a very simpleway of power filling, just lettingyourself umm receiveenergy and mana from nature.I love that. And and and I love, I'malways, and I know you do too. And somany of our listeners, we're alwayslooking for the intersection betweenthese worlds of spirituality and science. And you know, my opinion is they'rereally one in the same. We're all justusing different words for the same thingbecause everything you're talking about, about the power field is talking aboutheart coherence and the electromagneticfrequency and it, you know, it sendsthings off. And so it's like. You know, Ihave my own. I like that you put the wooin it, but I'm always like, it's science, man. You don't like science.Only science. Even if you thinkabout it, Megan, if you do, let's say youdo a power retrieval. And soshamanism, your your shamanicjourneys communicate in the same languageas dreams, which is through symbols. Sothe guides of higher consciousness comein the form of a symbol. It might be adragon, or it might be a pyramid, orwhatever it is. But that symbolmight bring you the power ofyour voice, or the power of boundaries,or the power of self-love, or whateverself-acceptance. Anytime you think ofthat symbol, it's activated. theneural pathway and the neural map that'sassociated with that power. So again, I don't think it matters ifyou if you have a scientific,I have a pretty scientific mind as well.So that was always really important to methat this adds up and it wasreally a trip to discover the EMDRlanguage and this idea of beingpower-filled is the same, it's justapproaching it from differentperspectives. Right, and lookat that. Indigenous cultures and wisdomtraditions once again showing us the way.I feel like I say that like on everyepisode. And yes, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Yes, absolutely.Because it's always, I say that, youknow, as a cheeky tone, but I'm like ofthe ultimate reference because hello.Exactly. And I was telling Julia beforewe got started that I basically have likethe jungle book of spirit guidesnow, like between my giraffe and myelephant and my glow in the dark, glow inthe dark tiger. And then I recentlyacquired a snake, which I was terrifiedof, but not anymore. And like this, it'sopen, open your heart, right? There's somuch and that's why we, I have you onbecause this is such a fascinatingconcept and so. Something you said thereactually segues beautifully into the nextsection. But, you know, again, you said going out in naturecan fill us with power. And I'm sureyou've heard by now of, you know, grounding and forest walks and all thesethings that are hot and, you know, likeeverybody's doing them now. But it's,again, circling back to this beautifultradition, right? And so do you haveanything to say on that before we moveforward into our little special powerpaths?Yeah, I remember,I think it was on NPR, I hearda gentleman who is a sound healer andhe was talking about how the rhythm ofthe oceans, I'm sorry, the waves at theocean is similar to the humanheartbeat. Umm And so ifyou just hear the sound of the waves, itcan harmonize you with aheartbeat, it can regulate your nervoussystem. SoWere made of the same elements. Soit it makes sense. And I think, you know, the Dalai Lama has said he's very excitedto be alive in this era because he said alot of Buddhism will be proven true byscience. And I think the samegoes for these sorts of practices.Yeah, yeah, I know, I knowIt's sointeresting, right?Like even in yoga wehave all these bandhas and then Koraku. It's like. It's just really interesting, you know, this, this, not that, not thatBuddhism needs to be validated by anymeans, but it's like that's what'shappening, right? It's validated by, youknowmodern science and understandingit, but it's like, it's so incrediblebecause these practices are so rich andlasting for a reason, clearly. Andthere's this intermingling around theworld and these different languaging forthe same thing. And so I love that. Ilove this concept of being power filled, right?Power filled compared to powerful, because of course we see all thisimbalance of power and everything. And soit's like, well, you can make your headspin and your heart explode. But let'scome back to just being power filledand how we can do that.So we have reached the section of ourepisode where we are going totake a soulful power pausefor healing and strength and learn how toget grounded in nature anywhere, likeeven on an airplane or in an office. Youdon't even have to be in nature becauseJulia is going to take us through anexercise to help us to do that. So wouldyou please?Yes, andum just to know thatGoing towhat's called your journey spot or yourpower place is foundational when youlearn how to do shamanic journeys. Sothis is a basicbuilding block for any other type of workyou do. This is a very brief version, butit it hopefully will help you learn howto begin to tune into nature inside yourown mind. And I love that you said youcan do it anywhere because it's very easyto get into this idea of, oh, I don'thave time, I can't do this. et cetera. You can do this while you're sitting on asubway, in a car, you can do it anywhere. And even just two to three minutes isreally helpful. So,all right. So I invite you toclose your eyes along with me.And first and foremost, just simplynotice where your breath is.Noticing all of the places where yourbreath meets the different parts of yourbody.Noticing where your breath goes as youbreathe inand as you breathe out.Noticing how your breath is like abridge between yourouter and your inner worlds. And with each breath, you find yourselfdrawing more and more closely to yourinner world. We're going to be taking a journey tothat place in your inner worldwhere everything you've ever known orsensed, felt, imagined, or experiencedis recorded. And where you will reconnect with therhythmof nature herself. As your gaze turnsinward, imagine a place in nature where youfeel comfortable and at peace. And this place can be a real place thatyou've visited or seen.Or it can be entirely imagined. So letting whatever this place is, justknow it is filled withyour favorite elements of nature.Whether you're drawn to a place nearwater or near mountains ortrees, the desert, acave, just letting an image cometo you.And as you imagine yourselfin that place, notice whatit feels like to be in that place.Noticing if there is a breezeor if the air is still.Listening for any sounds.noticing the quality of light,if it's day or if it's night, remembering how much this placeis a part of you and you are a part ofit. And as you give yourself completepermission to connect withthis place,Let every cell harmonize with therhythm of nature. As you remember that you are nature, you are made of the same elements, fire, earth, air, water, space. And as you deepen your connection tothis place, not having to fix anythingor do anything, just letting yourselfreceive thehealing energy of nature, just as a flower receives lightfrom the sun.And taking a final three breaths, let yourself breathe withthe earth herself.gently bringing that to a closeand bringing all of that Mana with youback into the outerworld.Oh, thank you. That was solovely. And soWhat we just did there was a beautifullittle soulful power pause. And if you'rewatching this video all on its own, thatpower pause was part of a fullepisode of the Movement Mind and Meaningpodcast on healing at a soul level withour beautiful guest here, Julia. And soif you want to get a deeper understandingfor everything we're talking about andhow we got to this point in theconversation, make sure to check out thewhole episode because there's so muchmagic over there. And soFor those of you that are unfamiliar, mana is the same conceptas prana or chi or lifeforce energy or the pulse of life thatyou see in nature that hopefully you'refeeling inside your whole beingness nowand that you are filled up with. So thankyou so much, Julia. That was lovely.Yeah, my pleasure. So it's such a beautifulpractice and so simple, right? And so Ican see how. You know, really anchoringinto that and and grounding into thatbecause you know, being part of nature,we're part of natureand we forget that sometimes becausewe're so part of technology. And soreally anchoring back into that place ona consistent basis I would imagine is sopowerful and so. and healing andreconnecting to self and anchoring backin the body, right? In that peace, thatknowing that comes when we drop into thatstillness and reconnect to the parts ofwho we are. And so you spoke to this alittle bit, but I'd love to maybe bringour conversation to a close by speakingto what happens with peoplewhen we reclaim these parts of ourselves, when we fill ourselves with powerandreally bring this backto wholeness. What do you notice when itcomes to people's life experience orbeing able to navigate challengingsituations or, you know, anxiety, depression?Like what do you see as as abeautiful outcome and byproduct of doingthat practice or these practices orworking with you?Goodquestion. The first thing I would say isthat our resilience increases where we'reable to weather whateverqualities of the day are happening, whether it's stormy weather orotherwise, we can bounce back from thingsfaster. Another thing that I've seen, notonly in myself, but in many clients, ispeople reconnect with their intuitionmore. Because if we don't have theseparts, we sort of tend to seekoutward. We seekadvice, we seek guidance, and the morepieces of ourselves we get back, we canhear our own intuitionmore. So typically there's more confidence. It's easier to connect with people. It'sI think this is really crucial to sayit's possible to feel a lotmore pleasure in the body. UhJoy, joy, energy. As one of my Buddhistmentors, Robert Thurman says, all of thechakras can have orgasms.I say that in terms ofIt's important justto know that we can flow joy or blissenergy through our whole body. And thisactually makes it easier because it'ssort of like if if a soul partcomes back, it's like the the train canrun over those tracks more easily. Soenergy can move more peacefullythroughout our body. And one other pointI would like to say, especially foranyone who's done a lot of therapy andthey're curious about soul retrievals, isthat soul parts will only come back ifthey know it's safe. So if anyone hasdone a lot of work, that actually helpscreate safety. So these youngparts know that the adult self will beable to take care of them.So part of soul parts coming back is webecome our own father or mother. So ifsoul parts, again, they bring backfeelings that maybe were too overwhelmingfor us at the time. So maybe it's griefor maybe it's anger or sadness we didn'tget to express. It's not unusual thatwhen a soul part comes back, we mightbe watching a movie and suddenly we cryfor like an hour and it's like, where didthat come from?It might be that soul partfinally getting to express its feelingsand the adult self that's done all ofthis work is able to hold spacefor these parts in a way that maybe theydidn't have space held for them before. So in addition to thefeelings being able to be processed, sortof the emotional circuit getting tocomplete these parts also bring backgifts. So I've had clients whorediscovered the gift of of playor innocence orcreativity. So parts that we gotdisconnected, a lot of people come andthey're like, I'm just not creative. Iused to be when I was little, but I'm notanymore. Those parts can come back.So it's not unusual that peoplehaveHad creative energiesreturn and that's a hugegiftfor sure. Oh, I love that. I lovethat. And it's just this beautiful.Reintegration, and it seems appropriatesince we're talking so much aboutBuddhism, but like the the many petals ofthe flower of the Lotus that is you, right? And bringing back these parts, butthe the parts returning when they knowthat it's safe, right? And you're going tobe able to hold them and nurture them andand tend in this beautiful way.So it really sounds like a return, youknow, part by part, piece by piece, retrieval by retrieval, a return towholeness in a sense. Yeah.Yes. Lovely.Wow, that's beautiful. And it's just sucha beautiful practice and the simplicityof it. And and so I know that you knowwhat we did there was helping people toreally drop into that energy andbegin the journey and and to tofill themselves with power andpresence and mana and so.if people are interested in learningmore, because I know they will be, whatwould the next step be to be able toconnect with you and learn more aboutthese tools?Yeah, well, Ihave a website,nonordinarypsychology.com,and people are welcome to reach out. Ido a free 20 minute consultation.I am licensed as an MFT in bothCalifornia and Hawaii. But I work withpeople all over the country, in fact, allover the world as a shamanicpractitioner. So that takes care of thelicense issue.Perfect. Way to open yourself up toglobal impact.Because here we all need it, right? And sothat's beautiful. That's beautiful. Thankyou. That and allof the links and such will be in thedescription in the show notes as well. Somake sure to go over and learn more aboutnon-ordinary psychology. That'sbrilliant. And hello,Rooster. I don't know if you can hearthat, but that's what that is. Don'tworry, everyone's fine. It's Roosters inthe backyard. And so aswe wrap up, as we wrapup, is there anything that you?wanted to include in the conversationthat we didn't get to or anything thatyou feel like would kind of weave it alltogether that you wanted to finish upwith? No, I think yourquestions were really spot on. SoI feel complete. Oh, well, lovely. Thank you so much. Well then, beautiful. So this is really helping usto heal at the soul level and look atThese the world essentially and your lifeand yourself and your persona and and thechallenges that you get presented withfrom a different perspective. And solooking at how you can go back andtend to and retrieve these beautifulparts of you and and I will tell you it'squite an an incredible experienceto be able to work with Julia and to beable to reclaim and to have these toolsthat you can then use to.Recognize, you know, that life happensand that we we get to navigate it andand open our minds and hearts to thesebeautiful perspectives, right. And so,you know, if you've, if you've got alittle bit maybe up to your eyeballs andor maybe a little frustrated with othermodalities that haven't been working, maybe this is it. Maybe like this is thepiece that's going to bring all of that, you knowAnd so who knows. So I love thatyou were on here and thank you forsharing your work with the world firstand foremost, but also sharing it with ustoday. Julia, thank you so much for beinghere. ohh Thank you for inviting me. It'san honor. Lovely. Well, make sure to check out the links in theshow notes and also to please sharethis episode with anyone that you thinkwould be open-minded, open-hearted tothis, doing this beautiful integrationand power filling like, hello, that's sopowerful.
