SPECIAL EDITION: MALAWI - PART 1 - Kamuzu Academy Class of 93 talks Malawi, education, leadership and corruption

from Business, Wealth And Mindset Podcast · host Alex Sapala

In this very, in-depth discussion a panel of guests talks all things Malawi, where it is now where it has come from and what needs to be done moving forward. With a panel that encompasses wide-ranging expertise and experience there are fascinating opinions and wide-ranging views shared. They begin the discussion with the question ‘does someone from a rural community with potential have the opportunity to realise that potential fully’ – one question that begins an extensive discussion.   Sign up to Jessen's webinar here: https://bit.ly/bizwm   KEY TAKEAWAYS The first thing that needs to be looked at is leadership. The leadership have to take responsibility for the state of the country. Individuals also have to look to themselves in Malawi people take responsibility only for themselves. But everyone together will result in a better outcome for them and the country. We think about ourselves more than anyone else and we have become corrupt minded people. As custodians of our organisations, we have a responsibility to move forward together. We should demand the public services we need and build community together. If we come together as a movement and collaborate we can achieve something We are all leaders in our own areas but we need someone to lead our combined vision forward. Currently it’s very difficult for someone from a rural setting with potential to gain the opportunity to realise that potential. People have elevated the importance of money over education. There is no generational wealth in Malawi. It’s the government that should educate the children of a country and ensure that their potential has every opportunity to be fulfilled. Education can change people’s fortunes in the most positive way and impact on the country.   BEST MOMENTS ‘We need to be banging on the door every day to drive the changes needed forward’ ‘We need something to stick us together’ ‘If we hadn’t pursued education over money we would not be where we are now’   VALUABLE RESOURCES Business, Wealth and Mindset podcast series   ABOUT THE GUEST Khama Mita - Public Health Bioethicist with the College of Medicine in Malawi Chrispine Sibande - Human Rights Specialist Lawyer based at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa Rhodrick Kalumpha - Group Financial Controller for an independent tea trading private company in the UK and Vice Chairperson of UK Charity MAHECAS Leo Kasote - Chief Financial Officer of microfinance institution ExpressCredit based in Lilongwe, Malawi Amos Nyaka - Senior Ophthalmologist and private practitioner based at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi Daniel Dunga - Senior Investment Manager at the NICO Group, Malawi Gibson Ngalamila - Public servant development and governance practitioner and CEO of Press Trust, Malawi  ABOUT THE HOST   Alex is a prize-winning chartered accountant with experience in financial markets from trading finance, capital hedging, structural foreign exchange and interest rates to operational risk from the world’s top financial and advisory institutions including Deloitte, RBS and JPMorgan Chase Alex has been involved in property development programmes across different types since 2008, building and managing a portfolio that includes standard buy-to-lets, student accommodation and other houses in multiple occupancy (HMOs).
