We need to wait and see if the new leadership makes the changes and takes the action it has promised. The political cycle is very short term so it’s important to build strong institutions that have long term visions and are separated from government. The private sector has a big part to play and having funding and oversight outside of government will help to build the permanence needed. In Malawi, systems are being dismantled at every level and there is corruption at every level. We have allowed the systems to be in complete chaos. Everything is falling apart but no one is taking any responsibility for anything. There is a need for massive change, a complete change of mindset at all levels from the citizens through to organisations and the leadership. Vocational education is something that can be developed and as a part of this, there should be business skills education so that individuals can develop their own businesses successfully. People need to be taught about what you need to do to be able to run a business. There needs to be export of products such as coffee bringing in funds that can then support the genius in the country but this will not be possible when there are barriers to education and technology such as the internet. We need to be open to holding it together whilst others come forward and take the vision forward   BEST MOMENTS ‘We need to be able to stand up together and say we have done this together for the country’ ‘Malawi is not short of brains or those who recognise the difference education can make’ ‘It is our country and our responsibility’ ‘Harnessing technology will make things forward’   VALUABLE RESOURCES Business, Wealth and Mindset podcast series   ABOUT THE GUEST Linda Dembo - Education expert with over 20 years experience in policy behaviour change in Malawi Peter Mota - Chief Legal Officer - Competition and Fair Trading Commission, Malawi Susan Kotokwa-Masiku - Attorney at law as admitted to the bar in 2020, business and education expert with experience in administration and children welfare in Malawi Winifred Mwafulirwa (nee Kalimba) - Qualified certified chartered accountant and business expert at Pyxus Agriculture Limited in Malawi Kambani Mchiela - Finance Manager and company secretary of a Petroleum Importing and Logistics company in Malawi Joseph Kamwendo - Senior Project Accountant for ESCOM, Malawi and Treasurer General of the Malawi Congress of Trade Union Brenda Malinki - Founder of Nango Malinki Consulting, a business development and sales coaching consultancy with extensive experience in sales and Telecommunications in the UK and a Biomedical Science graduate ABOUT THE HOST Alex is a prize-winning chartered accountant with experience in financial markets from trading finance, capital hedging, structural foreign exchange and interest rates to operational risk from the world’s top financial and advisory institutions including Deloitte, RBS and JPMorgan Chase Alex has been involved in property development programmes across different types since 2008, building and managing a portfolio that includes standard buy-to-lets, student accommodation and other houses in multiple occupancy (HMOs).
