Über 50 Jahre hatten Baschar al-Assad und sein Vater über Syrien geherrscht, die Bevölkerung verfolgt, inhaftiert und gefoltert. Als 2011 Menschen dagegen auf die Straße gehen, lässt Assad die Proteste brutal niederschlagen. Noor Arabou ist damals erst 18 Jahre alt. Sie versorgt verletzte Demonstranten, wird inhaftiert und gefoltert. Nachdem sie freikommt, baut sie ein Krankenhaus auf, dokumentiert die Verbrechen des Regimes und flieht schließlich ins Exil. Und dann kommt der 8. Dezember 2024: Assad wird gestürzt. Oppositionelle Gruppen, angeführt von Hajat Tahrir al-Scham (HTS), übernehmen die Macht, der Anführer der HTS, Ahmed al-Scharaa, wird Übergangspräsident. Und Noor Arabou? Sie kehrt nach Syrien zurück, um ihr Land mitzugestalten. Arabou kandidiert für das neue Parlament und wird gewählt. Unsere Reporterin Andrea Backhaus hat sie in den Wochen nach der Wahl in Hama getroffen. Arabou erzählt, wie sich Syrien nach Assads Sturz entwickelt hat. Sie berichtet, vor welchen Herausforderungen die Gesellschaft steht. Und wie optimistisch sie ist, dass Syrien eine Demokratie werden kann.
