Spiritual Bookshelf Episode 13 :Happiness and Dopamine: The Key to Well-being.

Hey there! Did you have a happy week last week?Philosopher Viktor Frankl once said, “Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you. But if you focus on what you’re doing, it might just land softly on your shoulder.”Have you had similar experiences? From childhood, we set goals thinking that reaching them would make us happier, but often, when we achieve those goals, we’re not as happy as we thought we’d be. Maybe we’re happy for just a moment before we start dreaming of the next goal.Happiness seems like an endless pit of desire that can never be filled. But here’s what’s surprising - Helen Keller, who lost her sight and hearing to meningitis at 19 months, should have been very unhappy, right? Yet, Helen Keller lived a remarkably happy life. At seven, she felt water flowing from a tap, and her teacher Sullivan spelled “W-A-T-E-R” in her hand, which made her understand the concept of “language.” During her learning process, she astonishingly mastered English, French, German, Latin, and Greek. Through hard work and writing, she positively influenced the world, showing her love for life. She said, “The best things in the world cannot be seen or heard, but must be felt with the heart.” She inspired countless people, reminding them, “When one door closes, another opens.” But we often focus so much on the closed door that we miss the opportunity that’s already open.Hello, I’m Philip. If, like me, you’re curious about why people feel happy or unhappy and whether there are ways to truly be happy and maintain that happiness, then this episode of the podcast might give you some good tips!To help you truly grasp how to be happy, we’ve put together the 5B Rules for Happiness:1.Break the arrival fallacy, behold the present. Harvard psychology professor Tal Ben-Shahar points out: Many people think “when I reach this goal, I’ll be truly happy,” but in reality, when people achieve their goals, they often find happiness short-lived or even feel empty. This is the “arrival fallacy.” This concept reminds us that happiness doesn’t come just from reaching goals but from the entire experience and growth. 2.Build deep connections, boost true happiness. “The greatest source of happiness comes from good relationships.” Harvard conducted a 75-year study that showed: The most important indicator of happiness in life isn’t wealth or achievement but close interpersonal relationships with family and friends. Even ordinary conversations and interactions can boost happiness. 3.Block instant gratification, bypass addiction traps. Instant gratification means getting satisfaction and pleasure from a reward without much effort or waiting. Examples include scrolling through social media, playing video games, eating microwave meals, or consuming highly processed sugary foods. If we often rely on instant gratification to feel better, it messes with our brain’s reward system and dopamine levels. Because our dopamine baseline changes, we need more to feel motivated. 4.Believe in meaning, beyond chasing pleasure The renowned philosopher Viktor Frankl said, “Happiness cannot be pursued directly; it is a byproduct of a meaningful life.”5.Balance boredom with ease, better delayed joy. In her bestseller “Dopamine Nation,” Anna Lembke explains that pain and pleasure are balanced in the same system. When we feel pleasure, soon after comes pain, often in the form of “I want more.”And that wraps up our podcast session. Hopefully, you’ve learned something today! Remember to practice these ‘5B Rules for Happiness’ to make your life happier!
