Sports Are a Universal Language | Jose Nunez's Journey from Azusa to Endurance Athlete | Ep. 4

from The Baddie Podcast · host LA Baddies Fitness Club

What if sports could help you feel at home before you even knew the language? In Episode 4 of Local Legend, we talk with Jose Nunez, the owner of Athletics for All (AFA), a private gym in Downtown Azusa. Jose was born in Mexico and raised in Azusa. He talks about moving to the United States as a kid and dealing with a language barrier. Sports helped him connect with people, make friends, and feel like he belonged. He played football in high school and college before becoming a gym owner. Later, he found a new challenge in road and trail running. Jose is now a Boston Marathon qualifier and a competitive endurance runner. He has also won Elder Creek and a 50-mile race at Griffith Park. We talk about his competitive mindset, his move from football to running, and what it means to build a gym in the community where he grew up. From Mexico to Azusa, Jose’s story shows how sports can bring people together and open new doors.
