Un 28 septiembre 1938 nacía el músico Ben E King. Este cantante comenzó su carrera en la música en la década de 1950 como miembro del grupo de doo-wop The Drifters. Durante su época en esta agrupación contribuyó con algunas de las canciones más emblemáticas de la banda, incluyendo There Goes My Baby, Save the Last Dance for Me y This Magic Moment. En 1960, Ben E. King lanzó su carrera en solitario y firmó un contrato discográfico con Atlantic Records. Su single debut en solitario, Spanish Harlem, fue un gran éxito y estableció su reputación como solista. Sin embargo, Stand by Me (1961) sería, sin duda, su éxito más grande.
