from Wave 94 · host Wave 94

Stay awake. Why Christians must guard against spiritual complacency. Complacency means becoming too comfortable or satisfied with a situation to the point that a person stops being careful or alert. In a spiritual sense, complacency can be very dangerous for Christians. When a believer becomes overly comfortable in their life and stops carefully examining what they hear or believe, they become more vulnerable to deception. The Bible repeatedly warns God's people to remain vigilant and to test teachings carefully. Scriptures such as Deuteronomy 13:1–5, 1 John 4:1, Galatians 1:8, and 2 Corinthians 11:13 explain why Christians should never become spiritually complacent. First, the principle of testing spiritual messages appears even in the Old Testament. In Deuteronomy 13:1–5, God warns his people that a prophet or dreamer might perform a sign or wonder that comes to pass, yet still encourage the people to follow other gods. Even if the sign appears convincing, the people were commanded not to listen to that prophet. The passage explains that the Lord allows such situations to test whether His people truly love Him and remain faithful to His commands. This shows that appearances alone are not proof that a message is from God. If believers become complacent, they may focus only on impressive signs or persuasive speech instead of carefully evaluating whether the message agrees with God's word. Similarly, 1 John 4:1 instructs Christians, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets are gone out into the world." This verse clearly teaches that believers must test what they hear rather than accept every claim of spiritual authority. If a Christian becomes complacent, they may stop examining teachings and assume that anything presented in a religious context must be true. However, the Bible warns that many false prophets exist, making spiritual discernment essential. Another strong warning appears in Galatians 1:8. The Apostle Paul writes, "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." This statement emphasizes how important it is to protect the true message of the gospel. Even if a message seems impressive or comes from a respected source, it must still match the original teaching of Christ. Complacency could lead believers to accept a distorted gospel simply because it sounds appealing or convincing. Finally, 2 Corinthians 11:13 warns about people who deliberately deceive others. The text describes certain individuals as "false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ." These individuals disguise themselves as genuine servants of Christ while spreading false ideas. Because deception can appear convincing, Christians must remain watchful and grounded in Scripture. In conclusion, the Bible consistently teaches that God's people must avoid spiritual complacency. From the warning about false prophets in Deuteronomy 13:1–5 to the New Testament instructions to test the spirits and guard the true gospel, Scripture emphasizes the importance of spiritual vigilance. By carefully examining teachings, remaining faithful to God's Word, and refusing messages that contradict Scripture, Christians can avoid deception and remain firmly rooted in the truth. ******* Hear more messages and find out more about Oyster Bay Church of Christ in Crawfordville, FL on our website: https://www.obcoc.org/ And here: https://pearlsofwisdomonline.org/
